We have listened for too long in our living rooms to Bill Lawry lambasting every opposition batsman who scored too slowly as "costing the team the game, gotta show some intent..ect. ect." So now it only seems fair we feel Clarke is doing a poor job by our old lofty standards. We saw that method of play cost opposing teams the game for many years so some evidence would point to it not working for Australia in the future.

This just cements Ponting place as a master ODI batsman. He has been able to rise above the situation and score runs quickly when its tough many times, and rarely set the wrong tempo in a game. Clarke is still in development and hopefully he will pick up the SR soon, such that he can score quicker for the same risk of getting out, and this ability positively affects the whole side.

The 'West Coast Eagles Effect' wrings a bell here. Take out the top elite (5-10%) and suddenly you expose the whole side as "not quite as good as we all thought". We need to keep our key pace setters in the side = Ponting and Symonds, to push on whilst the rest develop, or we will suffer against good sides as we have seen via an inevitable transition.

Sometimes, a lot of the time he just damages the cause by scoring too slowly. Chasing 200 that's fine, but when trying to get 300 scoring at a strike rate of 60 just increases the pressure on the rest of the side to carry the burden of upping the run rate. Players doing that are supposed to allow everyone else to bat around them, but sometimes they just collapse under the pressure of having to score at a run a ball from the moment they arrive at the crease. And playing sensibly doesn't mean you won't get out- usually you do anyway, for a 40 off 80 that your team would be better off without.

Then what really ****s me is that people look at the score of 200 chasing 300 and see that everyone threw their wicket away except Michael Clarke, stranded on 60 off 110 deliveries, and he gets cast as the lone ranger fighting against his team-mates' ineptitude. Sometimes I don't think there's a place for a player like that when not chasing a small awkward total
.

That is a baffling statement considering we have only chased 300 once in the last couple of years.By the way in that match his strike rate was closer to 80 than 60 and made a fifty.8-)
Clarke has indeed scored quite a bit slower than the rest and Huss is your best batsman by a distance. Cricinfo Statsguru - One-Day Internationals - Batting records

I guess you're blurring different forms of the game.
The only reason clarke has a 60 strike rate is generally because he has been getting out early.

If he's been getting out early, then generally he won't have faced too many deliveries, so even if he had a slow strike rate that wouldn't have contributed much statistically to his overall strike rate in the period.

Gotta make the hard choices.
Let Fergsuon score some runs vs some decent spinners 1st.

The next WC is on the subcontinent. I don't think Clarke's ability vs spin has deteriorated to the point he should be replaced by Fergsuon yet.

I'm starting to see Mukul Kesavan's point when he said he couldn't get his head around how Clarke has always gotten more hype than Hussey.

The defence of Michael Clarke has been RIDICULOUS. Because he's young, because he's a future captain, because he's blond and has the personality that seems like he should be at the Twenty20 forefront it seems his place in the LO side has become unquestionable and beyond criticism.

These people look past the facts presented - HE DOESNT SCORE MUCH AND HE SCORES TOO SLOWLY.

The same type of people mount absurd cases against why he shouldn't be in the Test team, despite averaging heaps and being one of our best bats since his return in the format. Because of his personality and image and past, surely he's not right for Test cricket. It's this inane selection based on what the right XI is based on past perceptions and not on watching any cricket or following their progress.

Ive had it with this topic because quite frankly people aren't able to discuss it rationally.

I think the main point is, 4-5 years ago, Clarke was a batsman that could play both roles.

Wtf happened?
Dunno. Maybe as he's made the effort to tighten up his technique for Tests, it's restricted his limited overs game.

Personally, I'm happy with the trade off - he's been pretty accomplished in tests for the most part since his recall v England in the 06-07 Ashes.

Any more insults and you get banned.

Although this is a prime example of my point that people aren't able to discuss this rationally.

He's one of my favourite players also and I'd love to see him to do well and nothing has made me glader than his resurgence in Tests, but he's not above criticism and his spot in the team shouldn't be rock solid and above question.

Never done basic mathematics then?
The only reason clarke has a 60 strike rate is generally because he has been getting out early.
I said generally not all the time.Other times have been low scoring games anyways and held on for a decent total. look closely at every game over the last couple of years. You will noticed it as well unless you're incredibly fickle.

Yes I can do basic maths but I'm not going to waste my time on a forum just to prove a point.Howstat gives you the basic low down anyways.

Can't believe they're wasting Clark's valuable match time on a no hoper like Laughlin. This is no laughing matter.

Does my head in. Dead set the stupidest thing the Australian management have done in the past few years including playing Cam White as a specialist bowler.

No, that was much worse than Laughlin's case. At least Laughlin has one good domestic OD season behind him.

White couldn't do anything right at the top level, although admittedly he was badly misused.

Referring to the fact he could be playing for Kent getting valuable match practice in England like Hughes ahead of the Ashes, instead he's flown over when not needed, not played in two games and only gets 3 overs in another (and let's face it, for a less than meaningful ODI series). What the hell was the point? In general playing Laughlin over Clark doesn't bother me too much.
