Stupid from the selectors to not take Santner in the last 3 tests. A good spinner is required at least for the variety he provides.

Carey earning his money today.

And I don't reckon I would prefer it moved after it pitched commentators. Makes it very difficult to leave confidently.

Yeah, and the forecast is for hot weather on days 3-5. This surface is going to dry out and become torturous for RFM types.

Phillips taking a 5'fer in the second innings of the last test may have cost Santner a gig for this test.

We have Ravindra too who can bowl the same sort of left arm spin as Santner although not as well.

Yes if this is a as-per-last-ten-years slow road then there will be a lot of toil for the medium pacers, and the pattern is that the team bowling first would be happy to concede 350 as they'll then score 550. Admittedly those pitches are terrible for spinners too - need top fast bowlers or very top spinners to make a difference.

No matter how flat, I'm as shocked as anyone that we haven't lost a wicket yet.

I was thinking that earlier. If Stead didn't think the part timers could fill the gap, then Santner would have had a much better chance.

There must be some kind of joke where you're out at a pub, and a conga line starts, and someone grabs you and says "join in! You know you want to!", and you're like "no no no" but they make you get up anyway. That’s when you realise that it’s not a conga line after all. It’s a Kugga-line.

Good bowling from Marsh, and a nice bit of swing there. Worth giving Starc another go to see if he can find a better length.

I don't necessarily disagree with this line of thinking either tbh. Santner was not a particularly good test spin bowler in his first run in the team, there's a little to suggest that he's bowling better in the last 12 months, but not lots of evidence. His batting is decent but at 8, his bowling is the first skill.

The two part-time finger spinners could in theory make space in the team for a riskier legspinner rather than a third finger spinner. I checked up on apex predator shark missile tiger crocodile Ish Sodhi and was pleased to see in domestic first class cricket his current state is to be too apex to run between the wickets - fitting for the king of both the jungle and the ocean tbh.

Ever since Bison's Ashes last year, Marsh has bowled some very handy spells for Australia from time to time. Looked pretty consistently threatening.

Ironically this is the kind of thinking which used to get Santner selected ahead of more specialist spinners a few years ago. Typical that they don’t select him when he’s improved.
