As long as you can read the flight from the hand and move your feet then you'll be largely fine even if you don't know which way it's going to turn.

He is reading the ball off the pitch and is quick to adjust. But to play spin well, batsmen have to look at the ball at the point of release, to decide which way it will spin.

Against a bowler like Jadeja, who bowls a lot of straight arm stuff with the odd one turning big it is extremely risky. The batsmen should know which way the ball is going to turn.

Same stuff was said about Martyn with his play against spin in India and SL in '04. The 'risk' is less when you're doing it right.

We'll have to agree to disagree. I don't think it possible to smother the turn every time. The bowler will just shorten his length when he sees the batsmen coming down on every delivery. Batsmen have to play off the backfoot too or worse to a delivery when he is caught neither on the backfoot nor front. Knowing which way the ball turns is a must in those cases.
Not saying that the ability is an absolute necessity, but it helps massively in the subcontintent. Tbh though, batsmen who have good hand eye coordination and quick feet can overcome most technical issues.

You don't pre meditate using your feet. You use your feet depending on the flight and whether your judgment tells you that you can get to the pitch. If the bowler drags it back because the batsman is getting to the pitch too regularly, then the prudent player of spin will use the depth of his crease and play off the back foot.

Let's not forget that Aus have batted first in all 4 tests and still gone on to lose (yep they will lose this too- only a matter of time unless something miraculous happens..)
