Hesson did that in 2013 and 15 as well. What makes this year unique was the 2-week training camp with the Duke under a marquee on England-esque wickets. That's still not as good a preparation as a first class warm-up match tbh.

The upcoming intra-squad match - Team Latham vs Team Williamson - could help the team management identify the second opener behind Tom Latham. It will also be a chance for Taylor to tune up after recovering from injuries.

"I'll go [in] Williamson team. They'll win [laughs]. Obviously with 20 players there and then the IPL guys, a lot has happened in the last couple of weeks," Taylor said. This was just going to be the guys who went over, where you add the IPL players to the mix I think.

"So that'll add a little bit more spice. It'll be nice to get a proper game but playing amongst ourselves is probably not a bad thing as well."

Is this nz vs eng series part of the next WTC cycle? Doesn't make sense though

No it isn't part of the WTC. These are extra tests added to the international schedule. England wanted to recoup some Covid-related financial losses from last year and NZ were very happy to get more matches and good prep for the final.

NZ is touring England next year for 3 tests which will count towards the next WTC.
