Oh, no, indeed, my first post this thread wasn't best thought-out, and the implication - which, yes, was there - that spin was as useless 1974-1992 as it's likely to be post-Murali\Warne (and hopefully Mendis aside) isn't true.

But spin was of no great significance outside the subcontinent in that time, and I'll maintain that. It was only once Murali and Warne appeared that it became a Worldwide-prominent thing again.

Fair enough!

BTW I agree with you 100% that the future of spin bowling appears to rest largely with Mendis. He looks an amazing talent and his record so far is extraordinary. I wonder if he can maintain his success or whether once batsmen start to pick him (which must happen before long) he will fade away.

If Mendis gets sorted out, there is another guy, tall and copybook style off spinner, but with a helicopter wrist, and turns it square. Sachithra Senanayake is a real prospect. He made SL's test batsmen look foolish in the interprovincial champion ships.

Code:
Player Mat	Wkts	Ave	Econ	SR
Mendis 19	111	14.54	2.65	32.9
Senanayake	12	65	16.69	2.67	37.4
SL's spin pool is not that empty. And interestingly, most of them are unorthadox, may it be technique or attitude.

I highly doubt Mohammed will ever play for the West Indies again, so his international career isn't what I'm term "promising."
Was a very tongue-in-cheek mention of Mohammed. It was one of those moments when Mohammed has to be mentioned really. The post wouldn't look right otherwise.

That said, Mohammed was treated horribly the WI selectors. More so than most spinners in recent times (even by WI standards). He's not nearly as poor a bowler as the selectors seem convinced that he is. Jaggernauth seems on the same track, mind.
I definitely would have voted for Miller if he was on the poll though. I think it's pretty unlikely that any of the three on a poll will have Test careers of any note TBH, especially Casson.
Miller is a definite talent. A season ago I was uncertain, and heading into the 2007/08 season I still wasn't convinced. From what I had seen he did too little with the ball to trouble top class batsmen. He was merely accurate and batsmen tended to get themselves out more than he got them out. This season he has really upped his game. He seems to be bowling with more flight than I remember and gets a bit of turn. That partnered with his natural accuracy has made him into a very good domestic bowler. And from the promise of his 2 ODIs, he's a good shot for a decent Test bowler.

I still don't think he's better than Jaggernauth though, because Jaggernauth has a decent doosra. Jaggernauth is more attack, but Miller is more likely to be economical.

Has he played in the ICL or something? Or just done nothing of note in recent times?
The selectors evidently just hate him. He didn't take that many wickets in first-class cricket last season, but that's largely because Jaggernauth was taking them all (41% of T&T's first class haul). He had a modest season really, but continues to be a livewire. A really inspiring player. I know you don't rate T20 as real cricket, but Mohammed outbowled virtually everyone by a fair way in the Stanford T20 and wasn't even considered for a West Indies T20 spot. That confirms to me that the selectors just don't like him. I can't imagine he would have made himself unavailable.

Better batsman and fielder than Ramnarine, obviously, but that aside, yes. It's a pretty sad story, but so many are in West Indies cricket when they involve spin bowlers.

EDIT: Ramnarine was initially excluded because Hooper disliked him btw. The selectors then followed suit.

I like Pragyan Ojha because he is very promising....has good first-class experience & keeps the bowls wicket-to-wicket......

Paul Harris, by default really.

Enamul Haque Jr. didn't look too bad in the one Test that I saw him in, but that was back in April 2006.

Beau Casson looked better than what I thought he would, but that's not saying much.

Don't really see what the fuss is about Ojha. He was picked largely on the back of IPL performances, which shouldn't be taken into consideration much at all, and Amit Mishra bowled far better than Ojha during it anyway.
