West Indies: Chris Gayle
SL: Sanga or Jayasuriya.
Pak: Not sure really.
Ind: Tendulkar
Eng: Flintoff
SA: Again not sure. Pollock in the past. Maybe Steyn.
Aus: Gilchrist in the past. I'd say Hussey or Lee now.
NZ: Bond in the past. McCullum now probably. Everyone seems to love watching him bat and seeing him as "NZ's only hope" when chasing a big target. Oram is another one too.
Bang: Maybe Ashraful cos its one of the few players a common cricket fan knows from Bang.
Zim: Taibu was adored by many.

Yeah absolutely - what'd perhaps be most interesting would be a "popular within" and "popular outside". Some, of course, would be the same to both.

As for NZ, its a toughie these days. I'd guess my mates would say Brendon McCullum, though is I've said before, he's a bit of a tit too. I'd prefer to go for Ross Taylor. Seems grounded, a bit of an excitement machine.

I think John Bracewell would say Hamish Marshall.

I doubt that anyone would suggest Iain O'Brien, but he's probably not even the most popular cricketer in Petone.

Oh hell yeah.

More was, IMO, made of that than should have been. A bit of a silly error, but really no major thing. Deserves a slap on the wrist, but no more than that.

That's very interesting. When I was in India, Lee easily had the biggest profile. But that may not translate into popularity, I'm not sure.

Botham in recent times has become, as someone once said, something close to a modern-day Trueman, better known to those who don't remember his playing days as a grumpy old lag than a great cricketer. He's certainly not universally revered.

Off hand I cant think of any Australian that has an endorsement deal here so locals simply look at the scoreboard

Lee has a big presence in India via music, endorsements etc

Tendy is by far the biggest Indian name here.

He and Dhoni have big endorsements in the UAE but the former seems to be respected more as a player
