Yousuf for me. Looked good in England, some glorious tons there. Much better hundred against a better Aussie attack in 2004 too. Dont recall much he did in SA bar one really fast 50 in the second innings a few years back?? Both players who need/needed to do much more overseas, especially in the case of Mahela, obviously. Actually in his case he needs to learn how to score runs on other grounds that arent called Colombo. :)

Got the idea from a post of vcs' in another thread. It would be interesting to see who is rated higher and why...
This has got to be one of the toughest polls on cricketweb.......I would go for Yousuf because I have not seen Mahela play too much........in ODIs Yousuf easily.........however in test matches it is a tight call.........

although on pure talent I think Mahela edges out Yousuf...........

Actually that Colombo thing you mention is very true.He has got-I might be wrong-2k to 3k runs in that one ground!Btw,wasn't Mahela's ton in Aus against a similar Aus attack to the one Yousaf scored?

Mahela didnt have the face Warne, McGrath, Gillespie, Lee. From memory he got Hogg, Lee, Johnson, Clark? EDIT- MacGill not Hogg. Not a bad attack but the Aus bowlers were on fire that 04/05 summer when MoYo got his MCG ton as captain.

He has played 23 tests at Colombo, thats crazy. Not his fault of course, he cant help the scheduling, but thats miles above the amount of tests any other batsman has played at one ground, and scored so heavily at.

Yeah..I voted for Yousaf too.He does have some major holes in his record though-averages in the 20s against 3 top sides from memory.Younas Khan is a better batsman, imo.

Yeah, remember Yousaf's ton.I thought Mahela got his against McGrath and co. as well.Yousaf got a ton or two in the late 90s against Walsh and Amby if I'm mot mistaken.

Too hard to split. Mahela scored a great fourth-innings ton against SA a few years back in an epic match-winning chase, maybe that should factor in.

I agree, statistically speaking these guys are like identical twins born in different countries.

Jayawardene: Home/Away=64.68/43.20
Yousef: Home/Away=65.25/44.88

Jayawardene: In Aus/SA=34.25/31.40
Yousef: In Aus/SA=31.88/26.10

The main difference is in England and India, where Yousef is strong for the former, and Jayawardene the latter.

I would still go Yousef though. In fact, at least Yousef has shown he can play in the sub-continent/spin (good in Pakistan) and swing (good in England and New Zealand). He doesn't seem adept in bouncy wickets though (bad in SA and Aus). Where as, Jayawardene seems to be able only to play in the sub-continent (good in India, and Sri), but can't play swing or bounce (ordinary in Eng, bad in NZ/Aus/SA). They are pretty terrible overall stats really...

I think I'd take Jayawardena, hasn't had the opportunities overseas with long tours to Eng or Aus, so prepared to cut him some more slack, and I love watching him bat.
