Its been a long tenure for Wright. A job that couldn't be higher in expectation.

Was he a success??

I think his tenure has been successful in test cricket - with a very formidable line-up created that is now a potent force home and away.

In one day cricket - he seems to have failed to solve the 5th bowler problem which existed when he first took charge, also failed to recognize the need for a genuine wicket-keeper until his last months in charge.

Overall has been a sucess with more highs than lows, but it ended rather disasterously.

Also, I feel it is impossible to attribute blame for some of these factors down to a coach when a coach has absolutely no say in squad selection at all in India.

But still no series win outside Asia since the mid-80s - not that potent really.

:p
in the last 15 years yes.
surely the indian side that destroyed england in england in 86 was far more potent than this one?

Wright's success shouldn't be gauged on his success to get a series win outside Asia. When he took over India had started losing series at home as well, we had just lost 2-0 to SA, had lost to pakistan the year before. Our team was in shambles due to match fixing allegations.

Since Wright took over India didn't lost any series in Aus, Eng & WI. India won a series in Pakistan in 60 years, reached the world cup finals and lost to the Aussie team, we reached the ICC trophy finals couple of times, India won more tests abroad than ever before.

Wright did great for India and at the end Indian team let him down badly. They should have tried extra hard to make his exit a memorable one.

And he leaves with the team in an equally shambolic state :S
Sad IMHO, and beyond his control.

I disagree. I think India is still a pretty good test side and can become a good ODI side with minor changes in the team.

Major or minor, i don't know but there should be change of strategy.

Wright did a good job with Indian team, but i think his approach to OD game was too defensive.Having 7 batters and just 4 specialists bowlers with no specialist keeper make little sense to me. Player like Kaif was wasted down the order at 7th slot.Besides if six batters can't do the job for u, then playing additional batsmen won't serve any purpose either.

India need to play with atleast 2 allrounders in OD team, and for that they will have to try out Sunny S, Joginder S, Sriram, Powar etc.

With no all rounders, no wicket keeper who could contribute with the bat, batsmen who did not know how to keep the score board ticking even when the boundaries dry up, more than its share of mediocre fielders, lack of batsmen in the lower order who could "rock" in the death overs OR bowlers who can stem opposition from going "berserk" at the death, India has NOT been a good one day side for a very long time indeed !!

What we, the Indian fans, seem to mistake for a great potential as a one day side is a large number of talented batsmen at the top of the order, who can, on their day, score big runs against most sides.

Unfortunately, even limited overs cricket is not as unidimentional as that !!
