Is there a team that can beat this Asian ODI XI?

Not quite sure I understand the DeSilva love here. A good ODI player but these are several better selections than him for the middle order. I think his 96 heroics colors opinions of him too much.
Yea but man turned up when it mattered. With Kohli in the side shitting his pants at the first hint of an important game, De Silva would be a good counterbalance to that.

South Africa is literally Australia with lions and elephants.
Yeah Australians are all culturally and criminally connected to the English as well.

Windian players have been playing in the CC for the longest time.

Half of England’s players are South African so the shared culture is quite strong there too, not that there are any Englishmen lining up for a spot in the ROW ODI XI aside from maybe Jos and Freddie.

They’d get along great. Obviously nothing compared to 3,500 years of shared history though.

World Cup games are important but that doesnt mean you ignore 95% of the rest of your record.

I rate Klusener highly as an ODI allrounder because of his 99 heroics but he also ended up with a fine record.

Well indeed, but the idea SA & Aus are somehow particularly different, especially in a cricketing context, is a bit of a stretch. Climatically they're quite similar, large arid & semi-arid areas. SA has more people living away from the coast, but I've always been struck by how similar the two places are when I've traveled there. Similar sporting codes overall I guess, which isn't surprising given the seasons are the same and both have a big British influence. Like you said, not the same as the shared history, but they aren't dissimilar imo.

Imran may lead an Asian test XI, but not ODI XI. Sangakkara is way overrated as an ODI batsman. If he plays he has to play as the keeper (which is not possible with Dhoni standing in). Abbas has a better average and out of the era SR as well. I would go for;

Sanath Jayasuriya
Sachin Tendulkar
Zaheer Abbas
Virat Kohli
Barbar Azam
MS Dhoni (c)
Kapil Dev
Wasim Akram
Muttaiah Muralitharan
Jaspreet Bumrah
Lasith Malinga

Two new ball bowlers Wasim and Bumrah starting, , with Kapil bowling through the middle overs with Murali and Jayasuriya, and makes the ball old. Then it would be Waim / Malinga / bumrah show in last 15 overs with reverse swing. I am still worried with the standard of fielding in this team, where best three fielders would be Jayasuriya, Murali and Kapil, and all being bowlers. Barbar and Virat are good, but they are nowehere close to elite level.
Fielding quality is not important when Akram playing. CW fact.

I was being sarcastic, shared history or culture or whatever probably makes negligible difference

Abbas, Aravinda, Miandad, Azhar, Inzy, Yuvi....etc > Sanga.

Saqlain > Murali imo.
Azhar?

I don't get the Sanga hate. At the end of his day, he has a very good record. I can understand Abbas being better but not convinced about the others. Maybe Miandad?

Maybe his record flatters him but to me, if you can't manage a 40 plus ODI average you don't belong in an all-time XI middle order, unless you are an allrounder. It just means you weren't consistent enough or scored highly enough.

I can understand have a 35 averaging bat as opener if they can blast away in the beginning, but positions 3-6 is where you need your most prolific bats to build the innings.
