I don't have anything against it and think more pay for cricketers is awesome but I reckon it's incredibly boring. The only IPL event that interests me is the auction. I followed the last two finals too on cricinfo, I guess.

One thing I noticed is - A lot of girls I know(17-20 age group, mainly) who cbf watching tests, Non-WC ODIs or even Int'l T20s, absolutely love the IPL.
Definitely there's a lot more women at domestic T20s than tests or ODIs, from my observations at matches (ie. queues for the toilets are a ****ing nightmare are T20s, walk straight in at test matches). I also think there's more younger children there too.

Whatever it takes!!!
Not all girls are the type mate. for them IPL is a stepping board into ODIs and tests. I now atleast one girl in this demographic who has started following the longer (and truer) versions after getting attracted to the game via IPL.
All my female friends and cousins etc have a very decent understanding of the game.. They can understand most discussions that I have with my male cricket loving friends/cousins... I guess the IPL happening at 8 to 11 every night just makes it a lot easier for them to follow it.. And it is easier to spend 3 hours on a game than 7 :)

As a cricket lover, i enjoy all forms of the game. Although T20 probably comes third after test and odi in rating.I don't know if i love IPL or not. When players from the same team are pitted against each other, it gives tremendous excitement and something entirely different to watch. And i lol when Indians say nothing has come out of IPL. Its pretty obvious many of the star Indian players who have come through the ranks into the odi setup in the international level has been helped tremendously by the IPL. It gives the young Indians a chance to perform with fabulous players from all over the world. They gain experience and confidence. Also gives players who are out of the national team an opportunity to come back by performing.

Found this for the UK...maybe someone can dig up exact stats?

IPL devours British TV ratings

I don't know about Australia and other countries.
Peak veiwing was approx 500 000 with average viewing at closer to 300 000. Very good figures for the network it was on but I would suspect, though I have no proof, that a large proportion of that would be made up of British based Indians. Still very much niche programming.

The IPL: Cricket's unexpected smash hit - Cricket, Sport - The Independent

i have one doubt say in countries like England.Germany and Italy do the locals follow the league of other countries with great interest will like to see some facts about them
I watch as much German and Italian football as I do the IPL

IPL doesn't offer much that domestic cricket doesn't, to be honest.
Its a different proposition altogether. The more important aspect i think is the interaction of these young players with various international stars. They get to learn a lot from them after spending almost 2 months with them which you can't expect to get from a domestic competition. Also the attention it gets is far more than the other domestic competitions. And the quality of cricket is a bit more than what you get from a normal domestic competition.

Yeah I think that's one of IPL's biggest pluses, but it's not exclusive to the IPL. Young players can also interact with other international players if they play, say, country cricket in England. I'm not a very big fan of T20 (that's an euphemism for "I dislike T20) so it's very possible that my views regarding the IPL are very biased.

As for the quality - is the quality of cricket in the IPL better than, say, the Ranji Trophy? Debatable.

The thing is how many of them get a chance to play in county cricket or any other domestic tournament in a different country with such elite list of international stars. Not many i guess. So this is the platform for them. Well yes, the quality is debatable. But i would slightly rate it more than any other domestic tournament in India simply because of that fact that good International players will always have that quality in them. Also the Indian players will raise the game a little more with the kind of competition. So the standard will be a touch above normal domestic tourneys.

I watch a lot of the IPL. 1/2 games everyday is great! I do think that the number of international players need to be raised. 5 or even 6 would be good. I understand the need to give the young locals a chance but not at the quality of the league, especially now that you've got two new teams.

Then again, I'm someone who wakes up to watch Aus-Bang and I also watch county cricket.

Champions League. The best T20 teams from all over the world take part in it. Chennai won the last one.

Point well made. Agree. :)

Not sure about this to be honest. A number of foreign players in the IPL are retired or trying to get into their own national teams. As a rule of the thumb, the quality of cricket in a T20 game is generally worse than the quality of four/five day matches. I suppose it's debatable though.

September-October last year, if memory serves me right. Pakistan did not send their team (Sialkot Stallions?) to participate in the league

I enjoy watching the IPL. Always try to watch MI and CSK games. Watching some of the lesser known guys do well is also something I love watching. Also the last IPL had guys like Sachin, Kallis and Kumble in full flow and that was a sight for sore eyes.

I follow the IPL just to see how the NZ players and my favourite players are doing. Couldn't care less who won the matches or the overall tournament.

I follow the CL to see how the NZ team does despite the stupid player rules. Don't particularly like it, but do like watching NZ players play.

The rule that states the IPL team gets priority over the player's domestic side? Yeah that's a pretty stupid rule. Players should be given the option of playing for their own side.

Ross Taylor not playing for Central Districts was like Daniel Vettori playing for Australia.

Luckily no Aucklanders are in the IPL iirc, so they should have a full strength side this time round.

I don't actually follow a team, based solely on the fluidity of the rosters. I watch matches for the individual performances, and I really don't mind who wins or loses. I still enjoy it, however.

That's why I chose "I am not from the subcontinent and I sort of follow IPL and CL"...
