Guess most of the Australian followed the tournament initially to see guys like Haydos, Gilly, Warne etc perform. Now that they are starting to retire I think the IPL is going to lose more Aus/other audiences. I will be honest, following Csk's game last night was not the same without Hayden bashing a few hapless bowlers. Was a bit disconnected from the whole thing.

Found this for the UK...maybe someone can dig up exact stats?

IPL devours British TV ratings

I don't know about Australia and other countries.
Hmmm... more people watched the free-to-air ITV4 than the pay channel Setanta that virtually no-one bought (unless they were desperate to watch every last premier league football match rather than just Sky's majority). I'm not sure that article is anything but major spin from Modi... would be better to see actual ratings.

will see a ball here and there while flipping channels.Apart from the finals last year and 09 I don't think I have seen more then 30 minutes of action at a stretch

I think both tournaments are rubbish. But I do end up following bits and parts of IPL.

I just like it as an after office entertainment. Just about the perfect bed time watch. A bit of slap dash, and which I wouldn't regret to have missed out on should I doze off.

Yup most likely...got a website where you can look that up? I'd be interested.

Some people bought Setanta to watch the Conference... but yeah, that sums it up. There were very few of us and consequently Setanta went bankrupt, and the IPL is on ITV4 because no one else wanted it.

I am actually watching Rajasthan v Deccan now, and I guess I'll watch quite a bit over the Easter holidays, but I doubt I'll go and look up scores to keep up with what's going on. I couldn't have told you who won last year, either, if I hadn't watched CSK play yesterday, and I'd not have a chance of naming players in each side beyond the guys I watched yesterday, Warne at RR and Tendulkar at MI.

Google gives me this:

MUMBAI: The Indian Premier League's decision to go free view in the UK on ITV's digital terrestrial channel ITV4 has paid off handsomely. The IPL's debut on ITV4 has been declared a hit, according to ratings figures released Monday.

Overnight BARB figures indicate the channel's peak viewing during the first three days were as follows:
Friday: 479,000
Saturday: 402,000
Sunday: 401,000

One thing that interests me in IPL though is the some dream combinations and battles. Like Tendulkar and Jayasuriya walking out together to bat, Symonds and Harbhajan playing for the same team , Kallis sledging away at his countryman Gibbs etc.

I don't have anything against it and think more pay for cricketers is awesome but I reckon it's incredibly boring. The only IPL event that interests me is the auction. I followed the last two finals too on cricinfo, I guess.

One thing I noticed is - A lot of girls I know(17-20 age group, mainly) who cbf watching tests, Non-WC ODIs or even Int'l T20s, absolutely love the IPL.

Yeah, that kind of makes sense with the heavy involvement of film-stars, snazzy opening ceremonies etc.

Stereotyping.

I've had reasonably intelligent discussions (now pls stop the jokes that for me they will be intelligent anyway) with a few. Many of them have admitted the issue is the length of the format which has hithero stopped them from following it.

Of course the "hot and cute" factors are a thing too.

There's no stereotyping mate. Even if you don't have the time to watch all five days of Test cricket, if you are interested in the game without the other trappings specific to the IPL, you would at least be vaguely conversant with results, notable players, rankings etc.. Teja said they simply don't have the patience for all that. So the IPL is a nice dumbed down version of cricket + entertainment. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but just calling a spade a digging implement.

Not all girls are the type mate. for them IPL is a stepping board into ODIs and tests. I now atleast one girl in this demographic who has started following the longer (and truer) versions after getting attracted to the game via IPL.

That's good to hear. One of the few good things to come out of the IPL, I guess.
