Ricky Ponting, coach of Mumbai Indians, says Buttler signed as a "backup overseas batsman."

He probably does not get a game sadly. Simmons nailed the opening spot and Pollard and Anderson due to their all rounder factor will be ahead of him, looking at the Indian bowling options, they will need at least one of the oversea spots to be allocated to a bowler as well (malina, southee, Mc Cleneghan or De Lange)
Absolutely out of their mind if he doesn't play. Anderson is an all-rounder, Pollard is a guy who bowls a load of rubbish and hopes it doesn't get hit out of the park.

If you go on performances as a whole then Simmons' has a very sedate record, just happens to be good for Mumbai. If you want to limit it to IPL then Pollard's record is ****e.

I think Malinga is past it, so not sure which bowler they'd go for.

Whatever it takes!!!
I think it is totally possible they play with just the Indian bowlers and play all of Butler, Simmons, Pollard and Anderson. If not, I think Anderson would more likely miss out. Fully expect Nohit to partner Simmons at the top of the order now, so they can basically play Butler in the Anderson role.

Buttler opening would be a really interesting move. Would rather him do that than Simmons.

I doubt he'd open even if Simmons was dropped. Rohit and Chand/Parthiv Patel would probably be a better option with Buttler coming in later with Anderson, Pollard and Pandya.

Whatever they do, I just hope Rayudu doesn't stink up the middle order because I'm pretty sure he'll be plonked in there.

Just remembered that Sachin's autobiography mentioned that franchise owners would consult priests about their teams. Maybe that helps explains what DD were doing?

8 years of IPL auctions and people still don't get that Indian players are naturally more valuable than overseas players by default.
Yeah, that is obvious.

What doesn't make sense though is the amount of no name Australian cricketers who manage to pick up deals. Scott Boland, Ben Cutting, Peter Handscombe, Andrew Tye and Travis Head. I mean they were brought for pennies when it comes to the IPL but when you see Martin Guptill, who has turned himself into one of the better limited overs bats in the world, unable to secure a deal when he's only asking for the same amount. You have to explain that one to me

Dan Christian was once bought for close to a million. Case closed.

I don't know whom to support without RR playing this season :(
Well, it turns out Rising Pune SuperGiants are actually a thing.

Seriously.RISING PUNE SUPERGIANTS. That is a name that needs to be spelled out in all caps every single time.

AND they have signed up Rahane, Ashwin, MSD, Steve Smith, Irfan Pathan, R Bhatia, Deepak Chahar, but for extra troll factor they also have Ishant Sharma, Ashok Dinda, RP Singh, MMarsh and Scott Boland.

And did I mention they have signed KP too?

This is such an easy choice after all.

Almost all the names are ridiculous. Just that you've gotten used to them. I think with time even this name would seem okay.

Serious the RISING PUN SUPERGIANTS have such a meme team. Rahane/Ashwin combo, MSD captain, TPC, Irfan Pathan comeback, swing sensation Chahar, butt-of-joke meme Indian fast bowlers Ishant, Dinda, and RP, the triumphant return of the forgotten Ishwar Pandey, memefully awful Scott Boland, a Marsh brother, Kevin Pietersen!!!, meme T20 utility man Rajat Bhatia, runs-out-people-with-his-nose Zampa, SL's meme big-hitting fast-bowling non-rounder Thissara Perera, and Faf duck Plessis. They even have M Ashwin - your meme undiscovered Indian T20 specialist plucked out of obscurity for a crazy amount of money.

I love it.

Decent starting XI too:

Rahane
Aparjith -
KP
Smith -
MSD (+) (*)
Ashwin -
Irfan -
Bhatia -
Zampa -
Pandey -
RP -

Although you just know they'll fit Ishant in there somewhere.

Although seeing that bowling line-up, 'Rising Pune Park-Trundlers' would have been a more appropriate name.

Talking about appropriate names, Chennai Supper Kings had the right idea. With that name it was only apt that they opened with Dwayne Smith.

Looks like I am supporting Pune this year. Nah, **** it. I am just supporting Ashwin.:cool2:

Is he unavailable for most of it or something?
Nope, available for the whole thing. Listening to radio sport this morning apparently he went unsold because the teams didn't know how he'd go in Asian conditions. Pretty weak really, it's not like he'll be lining up every game on a square turner facing Ashwin. Plenty of rubbish seamers running around ready for the taking.

Not really that surprising IMO, there's a limit to how many overseas players you can have.

probably the same with Khawaja who just had probably the most dominant domestic T20 season (albeit only 4 or 5 games) in the history of T20 franchise cricket

Though how someone like Lendl Simmons gets preferred over Guptill/Khawaja is a head scratcher

Jono

would Khawaja have been available for the whole tournament?

IMO there is no surprise Twatto went for so much now, as opposed to previous years, with him retiring from tests and being dropped from ODIs.

Can anyone tell me why Ishant Sharma went for so much? 25 wickets for 36.80 econ 8.54
