How do we fix England

He’s a cracking keeper but he’s not a Test 7’s arse frankly
but why?

he’s good enough to average as much as Carey at the least if he plays regularly and despite having only 1 summer as the main keeper he still has an average of 29 while also being part of some vital partnerships. i think he can do better than Carey if he plays regularly tbh

Foakes easily

its hard to maintain a consistent record when you are in and out of the side on a series basis like Foakes. the only time Foakes has had a consistent spot in the team was in that 1st Bazball summer till the NZ away tour ended and he averages 38.9 in that period and even there he didnt play a test in Pakistan. despite the flat pitches tax thats a good return for a world class keeper

but there will still be some ******** comparisons with Chris Read or some specialist keeper who couldnt bat to save their lives because some individuals here love their strawmen
copying from my post in the comparison subbie

Carey is a bog average 7 so that’s neither here nor there for me. I mean the answer to why is surely, watch the series that’s just gone? He’s played some good innings at home but usually when there’s a Stokes or Root etc at the other end. Throw him in there with a Tom Hartley or a James Anderson and he’s next to useless - his best innings in India was alongside Pope during his masterclass

in the series just gone he was okay though?? 3 runs worse off than Bairstow on average but around 40% more balls faced which is vital in India even if he should have been more proactive for some of them and was part of 2 important partnerships while also being the keeper for hours on end

from my perspective at least i worried more when Foakes was at the crease over Bairstow who i anticipated getting dismissed in the most comical way possible

the average for a no 7 in the last decade is 29.98 and for England its 32.28, the former is close to Foakes career avg and the latter is close to Carey’s career avg so idk what you’re expecting from a no 7 batsman, 100s and Gilchrist level??

Amazed how far Foakes stocks have fallen after 1 series in India tbh.

We were pretty unanimous in wanting him in the side for the Ashes. He still makes my first choice 11.

Carey > Bairstow comfortably anyway

If Foakes can match Carey with keeping & batting he's the right choice

Whatever it takes!!!
I dont think Bairstow's keeping was that bad 3rd test onwards in the Ashes. Plus, if the endgame is the Ashes down under, you dont get much movement in the air there anyways so he could well be worth playing as a keeper as long as he can score decent runs.

I mean Bairstow was **** in the series just gone, no argument. I’m not saying he should be a shoe-in. Foakes using up more balls than him speaks to respective strengths and weaknesses. But if you’re coming in at 120-5 and then the top order bat at the other end goes, the best you can hope for from Foakes is him to scratch around. Bairstow can come in at 120-5 and completely change the course of the match in 75 balls. Thats not to say he always will, but reality is the opposition would always prefer to see Foakes coming out to bat.

Carey is a better keeper obviously but surely even a buffoon as cretinous as you doesn’t actually think he’s a better bat than Bairstow?
Don't think he's a better bat, I'm actually a big fan of JB as a bat, but overall as a player. Carey's keeping is better than JB's by more than his batting is worse

Ide take bairstow over Carey. Think people hate on bairstows glovework a bit too much because of the Ashes. He'de been out of professional cricket since pre t20 WC coming in and wasn't fully fit in the first two games.

Not saying ide trust him to keep to spin in Asia, but ide back him to keep in SENA to a fine standard when he's not half fit and low on game time.

Yeah I guess it comes down to overall team balance and where you are playing as much as anything.

almost all of Foakes best moments as batsman have come in the exact situation you’ve mentioned, granted often it was the dude at the other end making big runs but without Foakes dropping the anchor the England team had a real chance of being all out for under 200 in many of them. he’s also not done that as much as he should have but he’s also not played as regularly as often as he should have

Bairstow is better at doing what you suggest on paper but he’s also not as consistent at that? he is not a Pant or Gilchrist with the bat. the opportunity cost has also been big with him, he’s played 100 tests and still looks no better than what he did years ago

for Bazball would you rather have another dude who can sometimes go ham like the rest of them and regularly lets loose pressure built up by your aggressive bowling or a batsman that offers something different to the rest of them and someone who allows you to be more aggressive with the bowling because he doesnt make many mistakes with the gloves?

Yeah Foakes with a Stokes, a Root etc is fine. But your 7 needs to bat with the tail, it’s as simple as that.

In terms of opportunity/cost - in the Bazball era Bairstow has won us games far more than he’s cost them. But that is mainly batting at 5. It’s not going to come off every time but the upside is huge and that’s why he is the better option.
