New thread idea. Cricket, I believe is one of the most condition reliant sports there is so here, you can mention a set of climatic/pitch conditions and then go on to pick an xi to combat that particular set of conditions and come up with the goods.

to kick things off,

Headingly, may, over cast, plenty of grass on the pitch so there'll be a lot of side ways movement both in the air and off the wicket. Won't necessarily offer lot of bounce and ball will skid

Justin Langer
Graeme Smith
Rahul Dravid
Joe Root
Steve Waugh
Jacques Kallis
Alec Stewart wk
Shane Warne
Jimmy Anderson
Mohammad Asif
Glenn McGrath

I stuck with players I saw (post 95). You can do as you please.

BazBall21

International Regular
Hard and genuinely fast wicket in Perth with a warm blue sky above and not much turn on offer for the spinners.

1. Richie Richardson
2. Barry Richards
3. Ricky Ponting
4. Viv Richards
5. Ted Dexter
6. Garry Sobers
7. Adam Gilchrist
8. Mitchell Johnson
9. Bill O'Reilly
10. Dennis Lillee
11. Curtly Ambrose

Got guys like Richardson and Johnson in (who are obvs very suited) to avoid it just being ATGs which looks a bit unimaginative.

I would have Thompson over Lillee. Not that Lillee would do badly

BazBall21

Very slow, flat pitch in Pakistan that requires the batsmen to grind and may offer some reverse swing to the bowlers.

1. Hanif Mohammed
2. Sunil Gavaskar
3. Zaheer Abbas
4. Javed Miandad
5. Colin Cowdrey/Shivnarine Chanderpaul
6. Andy Flower
7. Imran Khan
8. Malcolm Marshall
9. Waqar Younis
10. Lance Gibbs
11. Murali

Jadeja is an interesting choice. Should Ashwin be chosen above him?
If it's like Ahamadabad or Galle (1st test vs Aust in the last series) type, it wouldn't make much of a difference. Teams generally have more right handed batsmen so Jadeja may even be more dangerous

And of course bat deep

Old school Perth. Fremantle doctor check. Edges carrying to slips confirmed

David Warner
Micheal Hussey
Ricky Ponting
Sachin Tendulkar
AB DeVilliers

Seamy road.

Greg Mail
Dene Hills
Jon Moss
Ryan Campbell (wk)
Richard Chee Que
James Brayshaw (c)
Brad McNamara
Peter Worthington
Cullen Bailey
Adam Dale
Jo Angel

Bit weak in the top order but that middle order

I also wouldn't have Steyn for the raging turner as my fast bowler. Akram or someone like that would be better.

I would put Ashwin in there for either AB or Andy Flower and then the side looks fine. Actually, on a raging turner, you really dont need either Warne or Murali.

I see the AB was a genius on rank turners myth is still alive. He's a much better candidate for a pace and bounce XI. Wouldn't trust his keeping either. Pick Pant for the turner.

Dhoni would be much safer (and often exceptional) with the gloves up to the stumps and just about as good batting I would have thought

Pitch with dodgy bounce:

Sunil Gavaskar
Graeme Smith
Rahul Dravid
Kim Hughes (purely for the MCG innings)
Steve Waugh
Shivnarine Chanderpaul
Adam Gilchrist (wk) Can't really think of many great gilchrist knocks on such pitches but he's much better than all alternatives anyway so meh
Mitchell Johnson
Anil Kumble
Curtly Ambrose
Courtney Walsh
