Battle of SLAs.
If you know a better SLA, please inlude him.

Herath- 433 wickets at 28.08. SR-60.03
Shakib- 210 wickets at 31.13. SR- 62.00
Jadeja- 214 wickets at 24.63. SR- 60.62
Saunders- 79 wickets at 22.83. SR- 45.13

Although Saunders's sample of matches is small, he did pose himself as a threat. The strike-rate is impressive.
Herath comes up as a monster, we all know what he can do.
Shakib, being from a weaker test nation, and with the highest average in this analysis have a strike rate that is similar to Herath and Jadeja, which is spectacular.
Is Jadeja the better bowler because he is from a better team then?

Jadeja is the better bowler because he is the better bowler, he keeps runs down all the time which is why his average is so much lower than Shakib with the same SR. (Granted, Shakib does have the disadvantage of bowling to set batsman more often - but he also enjoys somewhat more favorable pitches to Jadeja.)

But is Jadeja's role diminished as a result of a more pace-friendly Indian setup?

Shakib most of the time is his team's best bowler..
But fair play to Herath for his resiliency.

Saunders had an economy rate over 3 (In his days, I'm guessing was more than 6 balls per over).

admittedly i have no idea who saunders is, historical offices are not my area of expertise bc off spin is for nerds and for cowards

rangana herath and ravi jadeja are exceptions to this rule, and herath takes the cake for me because of everything that he’s done - he’s one of my favourite non australian cricketers

On favorable pitches other SLA of Bangladesh bowl more thank Shakib. Jadeja has played most of his matches at home as well.

If we're talking the entire history of test cricket, Briggs and Wardle deserve to be in the conversation

Verity is probably by pick for best of all time

Yes if you're going to include Saunders, then the English pre-war triumvarate of Briggs, Peel and Blythe have similar (better) stats.

Then there's Rhodes, Verity, Wardle, Lock and Underwood. The English seemed to specialise in SLAs.

Elsewhere, Bedi, Valentine, and Iqbal Qasim are the only others who come to mind.

Jadeja is one of the only 3 cricketers ever to average under 25 with the ball and over 35 with the bat (if you apply a minimum criteria of 1000 runs and 100 wickets). The only others being Imran Khan and Keith Miller. A great company to be in.

Sir RJ is leagues above mere ATGs. And I am not even talking about his fielding. Haters can suck it up.

Yeah, Yorkshire are known for having a dynasty of left-armers.

Ted Peate was followed by Peel before Rhodes came along (for 32 solid years!) followed by Verity, then Wardle came after the war.
