Hayden & MacGill NEED to be in Australia's World Cup Squad

Mister Wright

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
When yesterday's play in the test match went into one day mode two things became clear - Hayden and MacGill NEED to be in Australia's World Cup squad. Hayden was dropped from the ODI team beacause of his patchy form in England, but he is back to his best now and he offers more value at the top of the order than Katich. Hopefully he can put in some big performances in Qld's ING games and get back into the team.

MacGill is Australia's best ever One Day domestic bowler and his record speaks for itself, he also has an amazing record in his only 3 ODIs. Now with the super-sub rule he should be able to play more of a part in ODIs with Warnie leaving it too late to come back to the ODI team and especially if the super-sub rule changes to being named after the toss by the ICC which is very likely to happen. It was just clear when the batsman started attacking (ODI style) MacGill is at his best. Given the state of the W.I. pitches a very good leg spinner will come in handy.

I'd say it's too late. The re-building has started already. I'm pretty sure MacGill is behind Cameron White and Cullen by now.

Completely agree.

When watching MacGIll bowling again yesterday in the ODI type fashion, I thought to msyelf, "WHY IS WHITE IN THE ODI TEAM?"

He was varying his bowling beatifully, heaps of toppies, wrong-uns, faster balls and slower balls. He was also varying his flight beautifully, bowled alot of flat one's but he got two wickets with flighted one's as well. There's always a place for an attacking spinner like him in ODI's as far as I'm concerned, but he can bowl really well defensively as well. Patel showed us yesterday how flighting it up can be atleast as good, hell it's better, defensively as bowling flat spin is. Flighting the ball up also gives you far more chance of taking a wicket. White is an absolutely pathetic leg-spinner compared to MacGill.

As for Hayden, having Katich and Hodge in the ODI team is an absolute joke when Hayden's missing from it.

It's not really too late, both are experienced players and we have seen what they can do at domestic and international level. If things don't work out during the VB series then bring them back in, both could even come in as late as next season's VB series and still be firing for the World Cup.

Yep, MacGill definitely should be in the ODI squad. His RPO in domestic games is good, and he's a wicket taker. White is really a batting allrounder, and his bowling so far has been crap in ODIs.

And of course Brad Hogg :@ :p

Whatever it takes!!!
I really feel sorry for MacGill. He never got the opportunities he deserved. Consequently, so many people underrate him (there are a fair few who OVERRATE him here at CW, though. :D )

Id agree with MacGill, but not Hayden. Jaques in place of Katich, but Hayden.. we'd be going backwards.

Agree with neither; Haydos is batting well, yes, but I personally think it's because he doesn't have the added pressure of being a ODI opener. Slotting him in the ODI side would put pressure on his Test game again and I think if there's one thing the Aussie selectors have shown by putting Jacques in the Test side it's that they would like him in the ODI side soon.

As for MacGill, you're kidding. He's an excellent attacking ODI weapon, no doubt, but he's a slug in the field and can't bat, recent Test 29 notwithstanding. I mean, could anyone imagine him slapping 4's and 6's with 5 overs to go in the WC? I couldn't. He's been hard done by as far as Test selection goes but Cam White and Brad Hogg offer a lot more with the bat and in the field which is important in the ODI game. Also, with the ball, he has a tendency to be expensive and if someone like Sehwag or some of the newer SL hitters start having a dip at him, I don't think his figures would survive, even if he took 3 wickets for example.

To avoid being completely negative, I'll say who I think should be in the ODI side; Darren Lehmann. :p

(come on, you all knew I was going to say that).

I still believe that making that choice would send Australia one step back. I say go with the youth... we have the players (Cullen for McGill, Jaques for Hayden) who are younger and will be more than able in 2007.

Oh for sure bro, a good allrounder. Do you like him or not?

HA. A mate and I were talking about this yesterday: the ultimate youth policy selection :D

MacGill has an excellent record in domestic one-day matches, and always seems to perform well in the International arena. It's never been MacGill's bowling, though, that has kept him out of the ODI side. Im pretty sure that the selectors look for players, in ODI's, who can either bat and bowl, or if they can only bat or only bowl, then they must be good fieldsmen. Looking at MacGill through this prism, you can see why he doesnt get much of a run. It's not his bowling, but the other aspects of the game that count against him. As for Hayden, personally I could never see much point in replacing him with Katich. Martyn, Clarke or Jacques - yes. However, I think that the runs that Hayden is making in Test cricket since the final Ashes match will, rather than earning him an ODI recall, only further confirm to the selectors that they made the right choice in terminating his ODI career.

tbh i think the best od team that could possibly be picked if everyone played (including warne) would be

Gilchrist
Hayden
Ponting
Symonds
Lehmann
Bevan
M Clarke
B Lee
S Warne
S McGill
G McGrath

Unfortunately through the selectors breeding policy McGill doesn't play... Hayden doesn't play... Warne doesn't wanna play. Breeding doesn't let Bevan play... Breeding doesn't let Lehmann play... Breeding doesn't let Hayden play...

Even though the current aussie side is playing awesome I think this side would be even better.

It could be improved. Australia will easily end up 2 bowlers short with that team if Lee has one of his off-days (and he's guaranteed to have them)

Yes but all bowlers have off-days. There's 4 specialists there plus Clarke, Lehmann, and Bevan (though Bevan rarely bowls these days).

How do you know they'll be more than able in just over 12 months time a spin bowler who has never played Internationally and a batsman with one Test behind him?
