Hashim Amla- the most misleading odi stats ever

ODI stats are near useless beyond the most basic level of analysis. Finetooth-combing through them for small differences is a total waste of time.

Agree with that. And that makes me wonder if ODI cricket is in fact more complex than test (aside from endurance and application required for tests).

I think its more difficult to statistically capture greatness in odis. Wouldn't say it's more complex.

The structure of ODI cricket means that it's a bit more controllable and straightforward. This leads to specialisation.

Umm, I will certainly not entertain someone who averages 36 as a specialist batsman. No matter how good their peaks be, their average indicates they are going to go missing often. Hence guys like Gilchrist and Jayasuriya only have a claim in an ATG XI for me once their secondary skills are taken into account.

not sure if srs. Gilchrist as a specialist bat? in an ATG side?

Pull the other one m8
I misread that as just "specialist bat" instead of "specialist bat on an ATG team". You're right that that there are several better options than Gilchrist in an ATG xi in terms of specialist openers. He'd walk into most real sides in history as a pure batsman but in an all time scenario it's pretty questionable.

Gilchrist on batting alone is good enough to make nearly any side in history but isn't worth consideration for an ATG side.

Would prefer Ponting ahead of Gilly to partner Sachin, if it was just about batting. But would rather have Gilly over Watson and Amla.

Rohit vs Gilly is more interesting. In the context of the ATG side, Gilly may be a better pick.

If you make him keep, it'd be one hell of a side.

I remember him opening early on in his career, maybe we could push both Gilchrist/Dhoni out and go:

De Villiers
Tendulkar
Kohli
Richards
Symonds
Bevan
Klusener
Akram
Murali
Garner
McGrath
This is probably the best ATG side I could come up with. I would have liked to have Ponting there for his fielding and he's a superior batsman to Symonds, but chose the latter because he was just as good in the field and a better fit for No. 5 (and part-time bowling as well).

Very good side. Would have Viv at three though, but it’s a quality outfit

Symonds, Bevan, Klusener would be a brutal middle order. Bevan coming in between those 2 is perfect.

I'd go:

Tendulkar
Watson
Kohli
Richards
De Villiers
Bevan
Dhoni +
Akram
Garner
Muralitharan
McGrath

10/11 of those players are automatic choice for me. Only Watson's spot is up for debate.

Edit: and may be Pollock worth a shout to replace one of the pacers to strengthen the tail.

Dhoni is absolutely wasted at 7. You'd almost be better off picking another allrounder, preferably one who bowls spin.

Watson? Shane Watson?
