Pollock was a no.7/8 bat and his average flatters him.

The difference between their bowling means potentially several series victories over the course of a career.

The difference between their batting means several matches at most.

The value that each of them bring to a team depends on the make-up of the team. It is similar to Ashwin vs Jadeja situation. If we can only take one of Mcgrath/Pollock, in a team with weak tail, Pollock gets in at 8 while Mcgrath will always get in for any team with a decent 7/8.

What if you don't have a decent 7/8 but the rest of your bowling is crap too?
