The first test match I ever saw live was in 1965 - England v South Africa at Trent Bridge.

Believe me, England's performances have ALWAYS been inconsistent.

IMO England do have a strong batting line up, although I rate SA's far more... Ill do a comparison if needs be...


However Hussey would strugggle to get into the England side... I could see him replacing Hussain very shortly if he was English, maybe he could replace Butcher, but definitely not MT and MV

I disagree. Butcher has done extremely well since his recall so, at this point in time I think it would be ridiculous to replace him with an untried player. However, as I said before, Hussey would likely have gotten into the team in 2001, when England has some serious lineup problems.

Marc, If I started going on about how Nathan Astle or Shane Bond would make every other international side then that would be arrogance.

Im speaking from a neutral perspective on Mike Hussey & I honestly think very few countries would leave him out of their team.

Keep in mind that McGrath was picked as and *snigger* allrounder.

Well yeah thats true because he was covering for Flintoff...however during the 1st test against S.A he was playing solely as a batsman wasn't he?

No Liam he was selected as a number 7 batsmen to fill in a few overs, he was most definitely not selected as an all-rounder.

Since he scored runs and Key didn't, he was then given a chance more as a specialist batsman in the next 2 matches.

Since he came into the side partly owing to his bowling, then that would mean he would've been selected ahead of Hussey for that slot, and retained it when Key left owing to his runs to that point.

At that point Smith was outperforming Hussey, and with the run of centuries would've been hard to leave out as we were looking for a MIDDLE ORDER batsman.

Also, England weren't looking for an opener when Butcher was drafted into the team again.
