England players and selection discussion thread

I would just persist with guys who aren't realistically going to play tests, who have some skills in these formats. Not enough 50 over cricket is played by top tier bowlers so you're going to have to take a punt but just choose guys only for this format.
What about someone like Potts who is on the fringes of the Test team?

Where do England go with the ODI bowling?

Yesterday showed we don't currently have a credible fifth bowling option. As neither Bethell/Jacks are good enough as it stands and arguably no better than Livingstone on that front.

In terms of the other 4 slots we've struggled for a number of years now to be an effective wicket taking side.

Below are the out and out bowlers that have played for England in last 2 years. The ones in bold will surely either be too old by 2027 in Rashid/Woakes case and the rest have constant injury issues.

Rashid, Woakes, Carse, Atkinson, Overton, Mahmood, Archer, Wood, Stone, Wood, Topley, Potts, Curran, Rehan, Hartley, Turner, Scrimshaw.

Will we have to find some talent and get playing them shortly? Or do we think some of these guys will improve/actually stay fit long enough to do so.

I'm less worried about the 5th bowler than I am a credible spinning option once Rashid goes. Australia showed you can win a World Cup with 4 bowlers and some fill ins, and Bethell/Jacks are very much in the Maxwell kind of category. But who is the wicket taking spinner once Rashid retires?

Agreed. Rashid has been the most important member of the England white ball setup for most of the last ten years and we have no idea how we're going to replace him. This ODI series against the Windies would have been the perfect opportunity to try out someone else and we haven't done it because we don't have anyone.

Certainly feels like their trying to get their pound of flesh from Rashid and hope he can go off into the sunset at the end of 2027.

So he can then retire just before he turns 40 in Feb 2028.

And the main reason for that is none of them ever bowl more than 4 overs (or less) with a white ball, when the main aim is to avoid getting smashed around as opposed to taking wickets.

Shoaib Bashir: England spinner open to leaving Somerset - BBC Sport I'm pretty sure that it was said on another thread that calling Bashir's County Championship record 'modest' was very generous. Anyway, with his Somerset contract due to expire this summer, Bashir obviously needs to move. I guess that his best opportunity is a county who will likely be happy enough to take him on knowing that he is going to be away most of the county season and that essentially his wages are being subsidised by the ECB. Grateful for any insight on how this works?

What if he gets carted around by the Indians over the next 2 months? He might struggle to get any kind of contract.

Fixture in England test team but can't get any county contract? That would be hilarious.
England like picking Somerset reserve spinners - there was a (brief) period Bess was being picked ahead of Leach for England too, but like Bashir he couldn't force a place ahead of Leach for Somerset and had to move counties.

England like picking a younger spinner with potential (and in Bess' case one who Can Bat) but Somerset have always stuck with the more maverick approach of picking the best bowler.

Those sneaky cider imbibing dastards! No wonder they've won so many county championships.

Oh, wait...

He might not be a fixture in the England Team by the end of July - I'm not reading too much into the Zimbabwe performance.
I'm certainly not reading too much into that either. However, the flip side to that is that if he's not playing at Ciderbad, he doesn't get to play on the far more favourable surfaces that Leach gets to pad his stats on.
