Like as much as who really cares. What's Atherton lad done to get a captaincy gig apart from being Atherton lad.

Surely Dan Mousley is the most senior player their with England honours and I think the oldest player too.

I take it this is not a FC game and it’ll be like the game against the Windies last year?

Nepo Baby Squad? Surprised Vaughan and Flintoff Jr aren't there.

So, one Test down, 5 to go this summer, how does everyone stack up?
Duckett, Root, Brook, Stokes and Smith were obviously coming into this with little to no scrutiny, quiet Test for Smith and Root, quiet with the bat but hugely encouraging with the ball for Stokes, and nice to see Duckett and Brook score quick runs

Not sure who, if anyone, makes way for Bethell, but nice to see Crawley and Pope back among the runs after a fallow period

The seamers weren’t much to write home about, Tongue probably the pick of them, not great figures, but as the ‘battering ram’ wickets perhaps that doesn’t tell the full story. He’s England’s second quickest bowler of the Bazball era—must admit I did think Carse would be a tad quicker, but there can’t be much in it, but I wonder if that means he’s the one to make way for Carse? Atkinson again looked if not bad, then certainly a shadow of the bowler who burst onto the scene in 2023/24, way down in pace again, why? Listening to Simon Hughes he seems to think it’s a run up issue

It’s the easiest thing in the world to say that it’s ’only’ Zimbabwe, and judging by their bowling, I think that’s fair to an extent for the batters, but I thought Bashir bowled really well, and would have troubled the best in the business with some of his bowling throughout the Test, and the stats suggest he bowled more accurately than he has in the past, certainly a promising outing

I can't see Bethell coming into the side for the VC, but they could drop Pope down to keep and leave Smith out. Unlikely though. I think Carse and Tongue are playing for one place, and Cook is fighting it out with Potts or Woakes. Cook started well against ZIM but faded, and wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't start against India.

Whoops, forgot to even mention Cook, but he doesn’t look like he’ll be much of a threat with English pitches the way they are now (Aussie pitches perhaps, he did well over the winter on tbe Lions tour), and he’s only in the team because Woakes isn’t fit, whereas I can feasibly see either Atkinson or Tongue in the team once Carse and Woakes come back (think it’ll be Atkinson)

The next six fast bowlers for the India series

1 Woakes
2 Atkinson
3 Carse
Tongue
Potts
4 Stokes

Wood expects to come back at some stage in the India series and Archer must have some bowling before Australia

The top 7 looks set in stone now with Bethell on standby to replace anyone not fit. Woakes surely comes in at 8 following a decent outing for Warks whilst Bashir has somehow made his safe spot for the Summer it seems (didn't see that coming, have India paid off Zim?). Atkinson surely remains as one seamer despite his pace being down, but should become susceptible to pressure if he doesn't perform. Carse/Tongue to provide the battering ram option. The squad is looking pretty strong especially with Wood to return too.

The problem is that the county championship breaks soon for the blast. At best, Archer/Wood play games at the back end of the CC season, you would have thought. Even then, I have my concerns for both of them given the length of time away from the FC/test game and injury prone nature of the two of them.

What is our schedule for the Australia tour? Is there much of a warm-up schedule or are we playing golf in Dubai?

I would just persist with guys who aren't realistically going to play tests, who have some skills in these formats. Not enough 50 over cricket is played by top tier bowlers so you're going to have to take a punt but just choose guys only for this format.
