Haha.

That was such an awesome innings, best I've seen in my life, and to think its only at number 10, wish I'd seen the ones above it.
It's almost like they've been playing test cricket for 100 years before you were born or something...

Those are two of the ones I was thinking of, thanks Sean. The other was against Fazal Mahmood on a dodgy matting wicket - will have to have a look on cricinfo...

Second innings of this match.

2nd Test: Australia v England at Sydney, 17-22 Dec 1954

Probably worth rating May's ton as well while you're at it.
Harvey's 2nd innings 69 while all fell around him in Laker's Test is also considered one of his finest efforts of batsmanship.

3rd TEST: England v Australia at Leeds, 12-17 Jul 1956
Cricinfo - 1st Test: Pakistan v Australia at Dhaka, Nov 13-18, 1959

Here - 96 in Australia's first innings, when only one other player got above 20 in that innings.
Me  Neil Harvey.

Not sure i understand all of the criteria, but if i'm not mistaken, there's no bonus for remaining not out? I'd like to see something given for it, because not only does it mean the fielding side were incapable of getting you out, in the context of a lot of run-chases or rearguard draws it means you've seen your team home as opposed to just helping them get there.

Also, did you put Gilchrist's maiden test ton into the formula?

Minor point also- isn't being 200+ behind going into the third innings essentially identical to following on?

To be fair, I have actually on done about 45 innings, and I did a lot of Lara innings.

Will update the list on the weekend.

Gilly's maiden ton gets 705 points

I will think about your second point. Perhaps give a % of how much their team is behind. 300 behind is a lot different than 100 behind.

Can you please explain?

I found it funny that for once Gavaskar put himself at no.4, but he came in at 0/2 so he opened the fricken innings anyway.
that match and his knock in particular had the word "DRAW" written on them in bold letters all the time. after winning the series 3-0 Windies were happy to take it easy once the first day's play was washed out. it was a essentially a four day test. when the west indies finished at 300 something, not big enough to push for a win or not too bad a score from where they could lose to a mediocre indian attack, they were not interested in the match that much. the indian innings was jolted by marshall's opening spell but gavaskar and shastri set shop and put everyone, including west indies fielders, to sleep. the only interest in the match was sunny breaking bradman's record no of centuries.

for saving the match from 0-2 and for scoring india's (then) highest individual score of 236* against marshall, roberts and holding, gavaskar needs to be given due respect. but still... the match was dead - you will realize it from the west indies not even completing their second innings. no one was interested in the out come. so ranking that innings at 11 seems to be just a statistical result to me. not criticizing your methods. i am sure one is bound to end up with such strange results once in a while in any model. i somehow liked your intial top 20 list. it was more reflective of the quality of those knocks.
