So there we have it the cricket web all time test XI.

I Khan would probably skipper the side I would say.

I've been watching this occasionally and what I've felt is that the really interesting thing would be to move on and pick a 2nd Eleven.

Most of the 1st Eleven pick themselves, but there would be much more contention in finding a 2nd Eleven -- probably only Sir Viv and Murali would be the automatic choices who are surprisingly absent from the above team.

Any chance of extending this to a second eleven, and then simming a series between the two?
A 2nd XI would be great although I won't be able to run it straight away as I am going away over Christmas. I also want to do an ODI team. Someone else is welcome to run one of the above though if they can do so.

Both Imran and Bradman would be more than competent skippers.

Anyway, it's a very strong team. I would have had Richards and Chappell in there over Tendulkar and Lara, and possibly shaken up the bowlers a bit, but they're all good choices.

Batting is ok for me but I agree about the bowling.

Imran Khan as captain. Good side, though I wish we had Richards in there (I would've taken him over either Lara or Tendulkar).

Richards should have definately been in that middle order, while Chappel, Murali & Lillee are other worthy players unlucky to miss out...

Benaud in his book my spin on cricket, explains how he selected his all time world XI.

He first selected 66 players and then narrowed them down to 33 from whom he selected his final eleven.

He also gives his final eleven along with two other teams (from the other 22 players) and its interesting to see how the CW team matches up

Benauds 1st XI Benauds 2nd XI Benauds 3rd XI

Hobbs.........Hutton.........Trumper
Gavaskar.....Morris.........Greenidge
Bradman.....Hammond.....Headley
Richards....Chappell G.....Pollock
Tendulkar....Worrell.........Lara
Sobers.......Miller............Botham
Imran.........Hadlee..........Kapil
Gilchrist.....Marsh..........Healy
Warne.......Orielly..........Qadir
Lillee.........Lindwall.........McGrath
Barnes......Trueman........Larwood

So. He agrees with 8 of our team.

Has Richards for Lara and puts Lara in the 3rd team.

Has Lillee for Hadlee and put Hadlee in the second team.

Has Barnes in place of Marshall and finds no place for marshall in any of the three teams.
I am not surprised at his preference for the three he has. I have NEVER seen a world XI by any of the greats of the game that did not include Barnes.

I would have thought he would have put Hammond in place of Tendulkar. But he prefers Sachin.

Strangely when he describes his team construction he talks of, two openers, three middle order batsmen, a batting all rounder, a fast bowling all rounder a keeper batsman, a leg spinner, and two fast bowlers. I am amazed that he just does not think test cricket has any place for an off spinner or a left arm spinner as a specialist bowler.

I am not saying they HAVE to be in the eleven but he removes them even as he formulates his criteria !!

I thought that. I suppose, though, leggies are more match-turning bowlers, whereas offies in todays climate (Murali aside) containing bowlers as pitches don't take much turn. Murali is an exception ofcourse as he's a wristspinner.
