"Err no. Indian pitches were very slow in the 80s but slow doesnt equate to flat."
I think slow and flat generally go together. How many wickets can you name which are fast and flat? In any event regardless of the terminology there is no question that the 80's wickets in India were extremely challenging for pace bowlers including those with experience on the sub-continent. How else do you explain the fact that Kapil went through an entire three test series without taking a wicket. Or that Imran and Akram totalled just 21 wickets in the 87 series.

A fast pitch can be flat - Cape Town is an example IMO. flat is a pitch where the bounce is very predictable. Slow pitches can be minefields.
