Why ICC got to do everything at middle of the tournament?

2025 Champions Trophy qualification at stake during ODI World Cup

All of a sudden dead rubbers got interesting but spare a thought for WI, Zimbabwe, Ireland because one could argue they didnt have a fair shot at this.

That's cool so the Top 7 teams + Pakistan will qualify for Champions Trophy. In other words you cannot finish in the bottom 2.

This means there aren't any dead rubbers.

Just found out that Champions Trophy is just 15 months away (early 2025).

Teams probably already knew, just that we are finding out now I think?

Makes sense to have this qualification criteria so that bottom teams continue to play hard till the end! Otherwise a few of them might have given away easy wins which would have been kind of unfair on other teams who had already played them.

Well if they can win 2 from 4 games against Ind, Aus, Ned, Pak- then they should finish outside bottom 2.

We won't even beat the Netherlands.

We can definitely forget about qualifying for this.

It’s not like England are winning a one day trophy in Pakistan anyway. But I suspect the game with Netherlands will probably decide the final spot.

Don't want England to miss out. It would detract from the quality of the tournament.

Although Champions Trophy is a fun competition, it's about the best teams playing each other!

Would Sky want to televise the CT if England weren't involved?

There certainly wouldn't be as much interest in it. I'm a bit cynical and I think one way or another England will be in there. ICC didn't plan for the fact a major nation would be worse than minor one.

And can ICC guarantee the same hosts would host India for the CT, regardless of whether this govt gets reelected?

That's just reality, politics will be the overarching feature of any Ind/Pak fixture whether we like it or not. And unlike the past I don't believe anyone in power is serious enough to solve it in our lifetimes, neither the army/rulers in Pak nor our successive govts here!
