He'd played decent during the tournament right? But still, it was a amazing first spell. Some of his best balls combined with some of his best wicket celebrations

That ball to get Gibbs was up there with the Gatting ball.

Sacreligious as it may be, before his legendary partnership with Thommo in the Melbourne test of 82/83, there was actually talk of dropping AB.

What about Cook's two knocks v India at the Rose Bowl (95 and 70*)? Was he going to be dropped? Probably not as his captaincy saved him - something Bell did not have - but it was certainly a woeful run, averaging around 33, and the press were on his case. His form (sort of) returned thereafter although I still maintain Cook has not quite re-captured his best which was 2010 - 12ish.
Even then Cook's best run of form almost didn't happen- was plenty of talk of him not making the ashes squad before his 110 vs Pakistan at the Oval in 2010.

He would have got another chance, but if Langer fails in the 5th Ashes test in 01, does he start the summer as opener?

Nobody drops AB from the Test team, AB drops himself from the Test team.

Oh wait, you're talking about the other AB, not the real one.

No way would he not have gone to Australia. The ton just took the pressure off him.

What about Steve Smith's first Test century in the 2013 English Ashes? Up until that point he'd made 3 or 4 50s since being recalled and plenty of other bats were being dropped at the time (Cowan, Hughes, Khawaja).
