Black Caps Squad

So we gotta drop Young right?
Absolute no-brainer, for a number of reasons. Young hasn't grasped his opportunities, too many starts without going on. Rachin just grabbed his with the firmest of grips in a big game, and did so in the warm-up the other day, too. The balance of the side improves with Rachin in the top order. And Rachin has shown he'll score faster than Young, too.

Not Terrible
We have Netherlands/Bangladesh/Afghanistan coming up.

So I reckon resting both Henry/Boult (1 at a time) in 2 of those 3 games is probably not a bad option to try and get Ferg/Southee in gear and ready incase of poor form or injury. Sodhi should have been playing from the start though IMO

1. Devon Conway
2. Rachin Ravindra
3. Kane Williamson
4. Daryl Mitchell
5. Tom Latham
6. Glenn Phillips
7. Mark Chapman
8. Mitchell Santner
9. Matt Henry
10. Tim Southee
11. Ish Sodhi

Young/Chapman/Neesham can maybe swap around a bit too

Neil Young

State Vice-Captain
1. Devon Conway
2. Rachin Ravindra
3. Kane Williamson
4. Daryl Mitchell
5. Tom Latham
6. Glenn Phillips
7. Mark Chapman
8. Mitchell Santner
9. Matt Henry
10. Lockie Ferguson (or Sodhi/Southee)
11. Trent Boult
My team also. But I fear they'll go Neesham over Chapman.

Brutal for will young..... what a player he is. He's scored some 4 or 5 valuable fifties in the subc this year alone. Idk. But then you also don't want either of golden arm phillips or chapman the clean striker gone. Its tough. And of course you'd ideally want a proper 4th bowler now. So basically we should have a sodhi/ferguson come in for neesh and kane for young (ugh, harsh on young but can't see dropping any other batter atm)

And if Young has a dominant score against the Dutch will we just go "oh yeah but they're minnows" and still drop him? Would be super awkward.

squad hierarchy should be a thing

India dropped Kishan once after he scored 200 because the spot was Gill’s and he was only missed due to injury

Yeah. But we'd be a lot less upset if someone gets injured
I know stats are not the be all and end all but young averaging over 40 in the last 12 months trump Chapman averaging 25 for me (and I like chapman and recognise he's doing a different job)

Also, as the coaching staff do you really wanna send that type of message to your team? Yeah sorry we gotta bench ya after 1 game cuz you got strangled down leg. Its one of the unluckiest dismissals in the game. But if its for the overall better of the team....so be it.

Tbf part of me wants to think that Kane saw his innings and thought "this kids the future, I'll bat 4" and everyone drops down one with chapman missing out.

Ugh, if that ends up being the case...poor chapman. Makes the most sense too i guess, he hasn't bowled in forever so he is that specialist batsman. Will miss his clean striking and always high SR too. Plus he's in good nick. Ravindra's performance has created some seriously good problems. Even though i love neesh and would always have him FIRST on my list in any high pressure situation, its probably him making way for lockie or sodhi. Lockie btw did come out to field from what hesson was saying on sky nz....so maybe his time is coming sooner than expected.

I thought Young can pretty much bat anywhere so they want to keep him as a useful utility player if someone gets injured, or am I wrong about that?

Im not sure it's just that on Young, he has a couple of scores recently but he also has a bunch of non converted starts. And unfortunately for him he doesn't bowl and Rachin does. Even if Rachin didn't, you score a big ton like that, and the 97 the other day, you're in.

Chapman may miss out for the extra bowler, whether it's Sodhi/Southee/Ferguson. I think Chapman is the better finisher over Neesham but Neesham being a seamer and someone who on his day is capable of death overs, probably shades it. Although as I said the other day, averaging 17 with bat and 55 with ball in a World Cup cycle should mean you're nowhere near the side.

Lol @ Mitchell
Haha, that was comedy gold. I knew his worst before he said it. 'When Dad played Leon McDonald at centre'.

And yet he still averages over 40, he's top scored in 4 of the 5 matches he's passed 50 in the last 12 months with just as many motm awards.

Hmm...Will Young is a member of the SteveNZ All Stars, I like him as a player and have been very vocal in saying they've dicked around his talent. But I feel like you've manipulated his recent stats a bit to suit the narrative.

His last 9 ODI scores (I picked 9 because that's what cricinfo gives me as recent matches, he did have an 87 in Pakistan before that) are 0, 12, 70, 0, 58, 24, 12, 33 and 29. That's an average of 26. His strike rate is 76 during that time, and I will grant that it is slightly affected by the Bangladesh dunger pitches. But he's still doing the thing he did as a FC player, which is not convert starts effectively.

To me, that isn't near enough to hold off a guy who just scored a big unbeaten match-winning hundred, and nearly another one before that, at much better than a run a ball. When you figure in that this guy adds to the bowling mix and potentially positively affects team balance, I just don't see how it's disputable that Rachin is the guy now.

Young would still be the guy if he'd converted some of those 70s and 80s into tons. He has 5 scores between 70 and 87 in the past six months.

I think the next match (assuming Williamson is out still) would decide things either way. If Ravindra scores big and Young doesn't I'd be comfortable with Ravindra being retained when Kane comes back.

Sweet, so let's say the output from both is similar and Rachin isn't offering a lot with the ball...when Kane is fit, especially for the Indian game and onwards, you'd go Young as it stands now?
