Best players who were not given enough chances by the management

Odi cricket died once they came up with free hit nonsense. They wanted to cater to folks with boundary fetish..
I actually don’t mind it in ODIs/LOIs, because of run scoring within such a limited time frame.
Should never extend to tests though.

But yes, along with some other changes, it makes it really hard to compare statistics meaningfully even only as far back as 90s.

I agree with the idea that Stuart Law was a Test class batsman who could have had a decent career if selected. Whether he comes under the heading of not being given enough chances through poor management selection policy is another matter. The Australian top six was very strong. I don’t follow Australian selection closely enough to know whether there was ever a case for Law replacing any of them. If he’d been English (or South African and we’d nicked him) in the same time period he would have been a regular.

There wasn't

If Law was English, probably would have had a similar career to Graham Thorpe

Vinod Kambli? Not too familiar overall with him so his non-selection could be for other reasons. 17 tests at 54, ended his FC career 14 years after his last test with an average of 59.

Kambli was a Tendulkar-esque prodigy whose records at youth level were as good as the Little Master's if not, better. Think they had a world-beating partnership as kids. Might've started out in Tests like a train and diminishing returns thereafter? Attitude might've been an issue too?

Although his record and performances make him an ATG, Fred Trueman's Test career would have been even more stellar had the disciplinarian selectors cut him more slack.

Mark Waugh's permanent position at 4 was occasionally under criticism right?
Definitely. He probably wasn't questioned as much as he should be for a few reasons. He was so naturally talented and looked great, he tended to make 1 ton in most series and often at important moments tbf, and he was also grouped together with Steve for a lot of people.

But based on pure numbers he was fortunate to keep guys like Martyn & Lehmann (and a few others) out around the late-90s to early-00s.

Yeah what's the story behind Ajay Sharma?
From memory it was a mix of India having a solid middle order at the time and his poor performances in ODI. Hopefully the more knowledgeable indian posters can add more detail.

Also coz the conditions for our FC were so far removed from international cricket quite often.
