Best ODIs "Finisher"

Mention the name finisher and Bevan comes to mind automatically. But how deserving he is for that tag. For this I tried to get stats of all ODI batsmen in history who stay not out while guiding their teams to victory. Needless to say I am surprised that out of all batsmen who have scored more than 1000 runs chasing and seeing their team win not out, Bevan ranks last in terms of runs/innings, strike rate as well as the indexed average (SR X runs/innings)

Please find below the list :

I am surprised to see Anwar and ganguly leading those lists.. and despite popular criticism that tendulkar fails to see his team win he is no.3 with a fantastic runs/innings. Dhoni is in the middle of the pack and i expect him to go further up. but what amazed me was that Bevan's figures are so mediocre despite him having popular acclaim as a great finisher. Hussey is nowhere in that list.

A) How about when chasing 250+ scores?

B) How about those chases when eventually there were not more than 2 overs left?

These 2 are not perfect but might give a different perspective.

How about that most of the other blokes in the list batted further up the order, so if they saw their sides home in successful chases, of course they'd score more runs than Bevan?

/thread.

Reasonably good point but that also reduce their chances to score such runs is it not? because they bat so high up in the order and it is not everyday they can guide their teams home in such a chase not out. So it balances out in my opinion.

Finishing is not exactly limited to those criteria right? I am unable to isolate that data from statsguru. pls be my guest.

No they arent the only criteria. I am just trying to identify those cases where the opposition scored a par to above-par score.
It might be that in your case the stats are dominated by those cases where the opposition weren't good enough wrt their batting, and the top guys cashed in.

Sure. That is a possibility indeed. I agree. So then the next way is perhaps to look at guys who bat at no.5 or below.

bevan does not even figure in that list..

That;s including notouts in won games in first innings as well.. I've limited no. of such innings to above 20 and runs scored to above 1000. arranged in descending order of index avg (which is runs/match X strike rate)

Shows how good a finisher was both de Silva and Ranatunga. batting at 4 and 5, and with explosive openers, that gives clear reasons why SL were so dominat in mid to late 1990s in the ODIs, and the very fact why they are struggling today as an ODI team.

Don't you think Sanga and Jayawardene are better than Ranatunga and Aravinda ?

This is what I am getting (added some other filters).

Batting records | One-Day Internationals | Cricinfo Statsguru | Cricinfo.com

Ideally we need those cases where when the batsman entered, it wasnt an easy score to chase but statsguru doesnt allow that :(

Imo, notouts also might not be the best way of judging this.
Check these two innings:
6th ODI: South Africa v Australia at Centurion, Apr 10, 1997 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com
5th ODI: New Zealand v Australia at Napier, Mar 1, 2000 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com

(Btw those openers showing up was definitely inflated because very few of those individual scores were 120+, which probably means the target was bit too easy).

Not even close in ODIs. They average similarly, but with lesser SRs. De Siva had a SR of 82, and Ranatunga 80. That's in an era average SR was 70. Now the average SR is 80-85. Sanga and Jayawardane are lagging behind it. Only Dilshan is comparable. Jayasuriya is close to that class, but he's nearly done with his career.

Not to complete deride your analysis, but I am not sure I understand the concept behind this. So your point is that, when you look *only* at the games when these players stayed not out *and* their teams won, that Bevan featured low on the list? I mean isn't obvious?

You would think that the number of openers and top order batsmen on that list is a give away to the kind of results produced from this analysis. It is quite obvious that if Tendulkar bats through an inning and his team wins and if Bevan bats through an inning and his team wins that Tendulkar would have the higher average given that he bats at the top of the order.
