cash assets

12/13: 67m
13/14: 84m
14/15: 80m
15/16: 198m (Ashes in England, then India in Australia series then WC) (Peever takes over in October 2015)
16/17: 135m
17/18: 83m (New MOU with ACA)
18/19: 26m

total assets
12/13: 119m
13/14: 140m
14/15: 272m
15/16: 371m
16/17: 317m
17/18: 276m
18/19: 240m

so everything peaked in 15/16, which makes sense as that year was loaded. We had the Ashes tour in England (i guess that started prior to July 1 2015, not sure how that works with the report) then the India in Aus test series, and then the ODI WC. Around that time, 'investments' spiked from 30m in 14/15 to 72M in 15/16, and then each year grew at 5M afterwards. 11/12 was around 64M in Cash assets as well, so perhaps they was a plan to keep the cash assets above 50M which has then been disregarded...?

CA love to say things work on a four year cycle for them, the reasoning being you might have India and England at home for two of those four years which helps cover the other two summers which may be SL/WI/NZ. But we had the Ashes in 17/18 and an India visit in 18/19, so I'm not sure that works here...

here are the links to the reports, since some of the links on the CA website are dead. someone smarter than me can make sense of what's happened

14/15: (can't find a link for this one. for 14/15 and 15/16, they did a whole site for the report, which they've let lapse - META Special Aerospace. the waybackmachine doesn't have a capture for 14/15 but does for 15/16, and the figures for 14/15 are in the 15/16 one anyway)

Yeah what makes no sense whatsoever is that CA missed a total of two ODIs worth of revenue so far. How can they be almost out of cash? The season was uninterrupted by covid and they've had to reschedule hosting Bangladesh. Two ODIs and Bangladesh were not huge revenue sources. What on earth is going on?

Maybe projecting the fact we prob won’t get games this summer and sponsors and tv cash won’t come thru.

The Australian said that they are claiming at least $15 million in 'investment' losses, which they imply are stocks. Wouldn't mind betting it's a combination of things like that and profligacy.

What kind if piss poor planning is dependent on share market increases to keep a sporting body solvent?

Complete speculation, but is it possible that they’ve effectively spent the World T20 money ahead of time, and now are in an ‘oh ****’ scenario where that money may not be a thing any more?

I went looking for more annual reports and found this Injury Report from 2004 which is kinda cool: Wayback Machine

I'd love a comparison for today. I've always thought during the Pattinson/Cummins sagas that the actual injury rate isn't that much different, we were just hearing about it due to circumstance

Fast bowlers miss, through injury, about 16% of all potential playing time, whereas the prevalence rate for all other positions is less than 5%. Part of the reason for the increase in prevalence has been the greater number of matches scheduled during the Australian and international cricket seasons, meaning that with a more crowded calendar, injuries cause players to miss a greater number of games.

Risk factors for bowling injuries:
Injuries affect fast bowlers to a much greater degree than the other player positions in cricket. Broadly speaking, a number of risk factors for bowling injury are already known: (1) Workload (2) Biomechanics (3) Bowler speed. Player age is a risk factor for some bowling injuries, with stress fractures being more prevalent in younger bowlers whereas some degenerative injuries are more prevalent in older bowlers
Bowlers can be rated as “Fast”, “Fast-medium”, “Medium” or “Slow/spin” according to player profiles listed by Wisden Cricinfo (http://www.cricinfo.com/) which tend to be universally accepted. The major point of contention with respect to these ratings is usually the difference between Fast and Fast-medium, and therefore these categories can be combined if desired to be considered “Pace” bowlers.
oh for it to be 2004 again

I forgot all about Steve Waugh winning the Steve Waugh medal. You'd surely be a bit pissed if you finished second...

Off-field, Cricket New South Wales introduced the Steve Waugh Medal for the state’s Player of the Year. Fittingly for the man whose name adorns the medal, captain Steve Waugh was the inaugural winner.
Wayback Machine

From that same report:

Queensland Bull Clinton Perren’s patience and determination at the crease were rewarded in season 2002-03, as the 28-year-old was named Pura Cup Player of the Year.Polling 17 votes from six matches, Perren took the award by three votes clear of his Bulls team-mate Michael Kasprowicz. South Australian batsman David Fitzgerald finished in third place with 13 votes.
I have never heard of David Fitzgerald

Well the other thing is they've gone to the banks to get a 200M loan, and the banks, like with the AFL, have said well you need to cut: https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/...ds-force-savage-cricket-australia-salary-cuts

and I guess they've gone to the banks because they don't want to dip into the assets...?

tbh if it’s anything like what the airlines did it’s more greed than poor planning - airline bosses across the globe took large profits and then immediately reinvested it all back in to their own stock to pump it up and make even more, and then it all fell in a heap as anyone who’s not an insipid clown would have foresaw

likewise i would assume what’s happened here is they (stupidly) got greedy, went and used their savings on the magical line graph and saw it fall in a heap when that went bunk

now

this is all purely speculation but it’s speculation based off what a lot of other large companies had been doing with their profits

Reported on an AFL panel show tonight that cricket don't actually have Boxing Day booked in for this summer at the MCG (or any internationals for that matter). Awesome barginining position they have for themselves with AFL looking to encroach.

Seems every days exposes CA as looking worse and worse. It makes me think back to the early 10s where 'experts' like Malcolm Conn proclaiming cricket had to move away from being run by the state's and towards an independent, modern board. Working a treat in recent years.

nah I disagree on that. After reading Lalor's article from today (monday the 20th, not Tuesday's) I got the impression that it kinda seems like they've made it seem worse than it is imo. they're say they're gonna run out of cash in August. That's not good. But per the article, 100 million is due to be deposited in September. So they're spending the money they got in March to the end of August...and getting a new ****ing stack of money in the first week of September. Now, the issue is that they're clearly expecting that 100 million to not turn up, so they've taken out the 200M loan to cover that + March 21's 100M, and like the AFL/NRL they've been told to cut staff by the banks and so it looks like a crisis. which it kinda is but also kinda isn't...?

Yeah not getting 100M of revenue and having to take out a big loan sucks, but it's not like they can do much about that. The decline in cash reserves is a bit weird since I thought they wanted to have above 50M in case of an emg (ie a key tour being cancelled at very short notice), but in any case they'd probably still take out the loan even if they had 50M anyway.

the big issue is dropping the bombshell after initially briefing the media that they'd been fine and keeping the states and players in the dark and being slow in giving new drops to the media. obviously if you're getting your broadcast instalments in two chunks per year, the September chunk was in danger when this all kicked off. it makes them seem dumb, but we knew that already

per Lalor the broadcasting rights from C7/Foxtel come in March and September.

There is widespread confusion how the game, which had $26m in cash reserves at the start of the financial year and received $100m from broadcasters in March, could be out of money.

Broadcasters are due to make another $100m payment in September. Cricket Australia claims it was at the low point of its four-year cycle and was sailing close to the wind with an eye to more cash coming in with the India series.

Probably for the best. He was a very boring opening batsman.
Fitzgerald certainly wasn't ever the batsman to empty the beer tent, but he was a decent contributor for a while. Was better when he stuck to his typically defensive game, was encouraged to take a more proactive approach by some in the SACA setup, and largely flopped when trying to do so

tbh a stodgy crease occupying opener like him would come in pretty handy for today's South Australia team
