Australian Domestic Season 2018/19

For every Steve Smith that does suddenly improve significantly, there are about 50 Devon Smiths who keep on producing the same old ****e for 10-15 years.

The thing is also Smith was in his early 20's. No-one comes into Test cricket the finished product at that age. Wade is over 30 and has had two chances at FC level already. To me he's someone in hot form rather than a significant improvement on his previous Test numbers.

That might be your general feeling. But I remain completely unconvinced.
No it's not my feeling at all, I said that it seems to be the general feeling around. I'm not commenting on whether it's accurate or not, just that the argument of bringing up stats from his pervious run in the team wouldn't be particularly relevant were people feeling he was a significantly improved player.

Blues seamer Trent Copeland is excited that three players could make their First Class debuts for NSW in the must-win final round of the JLT Sheffield Shield against Tasmania at Blundstone Arena starting on Wednesday.
Batsman Nick Bertus, 25, fast bowler Liam Hatcher, 22, and rookie wicketkeeper-batter Baxter Holt, 19, have all been selected in a 14-man squad for the fixture.
Holt is on stand-by for Blues captain Peter Nevill, who did not travel with the side to Tasmania on Monday due to the expected birth of his first child.
Recent Australian Test debutant Kurtis Patterson will lead NSW if Nevill is unavailable.
The Blues must win against Tasmania to guarantee their place in the Sheffield Shield final against Victoria starting on 28 March at Junction Oval.
Copeland said he and the team wish Nevill all the best with the birth of his first child.
“This is something that is far more important than any cricket match … I’m so excited for him and Sammy,” Copeland said.

He explained that the three potential debutants have been working hard behind the scenes to earn their call-up to the squad.
“Baxter Holt is the Australian Under 19s keeper, he went over to Sri Lanka this year (with that squad) and made his debut for the Thunder.”
“Nick Bertus has been churning out runs in Grade cricket for years and deserves his chance.
“Liam Hatcher … bowls 145km/hr, he’s red-headed, he’s angry at times and he’s got a bit about him that I think will lend himself to playing well at Shield level.”
All three performed consistently throughout the Toyota Futures League season that concluded last week.
Hatcher claimed 18 wickets in his last two Futures League matches including two five-wicket hauls and career best figures of 7-43.
Bertus scored 418 runs at an average of 38 across both the T20 and four-day formats. It complements his second season of more than 1,000 runs for his club, Parramatta, in McDonald’s NSW Premier Cricket during 2018/19.

Average of 38 doesn't seem that special tbh

It is certainly an widely held view, especially among typical Facebook casuals who are always looking for a new hill to die on, but I am far from the only one who just doesn't buy it

As for Liam Hatcher, last time I saw him was as a teenager for the Greg Chappell Invitational XI, didn't really look 145+ at that point in time? Has he put on an extra yard or was I just full of ****e back then?

I am 100% on board it in white-ball cricket. He should be one of the first picked IMO, keeping or not (probably should be keeping).

Tests not so much. But I'd have him ahead of Paine or Carey if his keeping has been as solid as it seems to have been. Probably wouldn't play him as a bat though.

Never seen the kid but I highly doubt he bowls 145. People always exaggerate bowling speeds in this sort of context. Wouldn't surprise me if bowled a few balls at that speed in some dodgy indoor centre one day but usually operate about 130-135 at best

Pretty much agree, I definitely think he still has a fair bit to offer for Australia with the white ball.

He is tall but had a pretty ragged action, lost a lot of height through the crease iirc, I could see how tidying that up could give him a little bit more pace. Still pretty doubtful about 145 though

First Class Debutant
Wade has shown a massive improvement in his batting in Shield cricket since he moved to Tasmania and largely played as a specialist batsmen.

He is now one of short list of Australian batsmen who have a first class average over 40.

I think he deserves his chance on the A tour and if he scores runs then can be in the Ashes squad. Perhaps he doesn't quite make the team but would be handy as a back up batsman and 2nd keeper.

Not strictly true, Wade's Shield record has always been fairly strong tbf. Averaged the right side of 40 for Victoria, so to say he has significantly improved is tenuous at best

Once #Bertmentum dayboos and dominates with back-to-back tons to round out the season, Wade won't even be mentioned on here, or anywhere. It'll be #BertforAhes from every right-thinking Australian supporter.

#Bertmentum is love. #Bertmentum is life.

Gonna be a hell of a let down if they stick with the foetuses.

Tend to agree with those saying Wade's in nick. His knock the other day was full of shots and **** me it was entertaining but I didn't see anything in his batting that make me think he should be in the Test side, particularly for an England tour.
