I was thinking this morning it's a shame to see such a hard arsed competitor driven to giving up (even if it's by his own actions).

Nel will be all right though. Health people are a lot more aware of and understand suicide better these days than they did 20 years ago. From what I gather his family (blood family) are a pretty close knit group so I'm sure they'll help him through.

Suicide is a complicated issue. That's all I'll say on that.

Regarding Nel on the field, I initially hated him but was converted into a fan. Loved his enthusiasm, and his reaction to the "Nel is a wanker" chants in Australia back in 2005 were gold.

He was annoying initially but he performed with all that hot air and it was intense and great to watch. Gunther and all.

His spell to Lara in SA, against the Australians and West Indies in various games and the Sreesanth incident were all great bits of test cricket.

That said, I certainly believe anyone attempting suicide needs help, and being a fan of his I hope even more that he is able to return to cricket at his best. But I can see why some people have expressed anger mixed with a bit of apathy in this thread, given the apathy Nel's shown to his wife and kids.

I don't think that's quite fair. I'm not an expert in this stuff, but I understand that people in this frame of mind often view themselves as a burden to those close to them. Suicide may appear to them actually to be a highly unselfish act.

I'm not an expert either, but IMO it was still apathy to his family, right from the things he's allegedly done that led to this. Also, it may have been a selfish or unselfish act. We may never know.

Matt mentioned a line. I think the line falls somewhere between "I don't like the guy" and "He's a cowardly dog for trying to kill himself while his wife is pregnant." One makes you look opinionated, the other makes you look like an idiot.

Obviously the general mood is more sympathetic towards him because anyone should be able to see that the guy is going through some pretty major **** right about now, and just isn't coping.

Never liked him personally, but wish him all the best.

It doesn't say anywhere that he is or was suffering from mental illness in the report. On the very limited information given it seems like he betrayed his supposed loved one then when this was exposed he made an even worse decision which only heaps more hurt on them.

Obviously the guy is hurting himself, but at the end of the day he has only himself to blame. Can see why people might not have much sympathy for the guy.

This is unreal. I cannot understand people having no sympathy for someone who is feeling so low that they are trying to kill themselves!

I don't care what they have done to irritate some fans, or hurt their family, they have attempted suicide, i have the utmost sympathy for anyone who feels like that.

Yeah, some people are just poor human beings. Saying that as a poster, not a mod.

In all seriousness, some of this in this thread I agree with, some is crap.

People with mental illnesses have my full sympathy. But everyone is entitled to an opinion, good or bad, that's the beauty of human nature, it's what separates democratic life to Hitler's rule.

Our opinion of people shouldn't change because of something like this, they're still the same person weather we like them or not.

And finally, and my biggest irk. I hate people that are really just scoundrels, who suddenly come out and say they have some kind of mental illness or excuse. It makes it that much harder for people with these illnesses to shake the stigma associated with them. Sportsmen are the worst. They get caught getting loose on the wobbly water and rooting around and suddenly they are making a media statement saying they have an illness rather that just saying they are a sleazy ****wit.

Ridiculous this story ever got out tbh, just epitomizes what sharks parts of the media can be. Given Nel's hardly in the cricketing spotlight these days, this should've remained a private matter.

I say Nel is a ****ing asshole to do what he did (cheat on his wife, not attempt suicide) but he should still be sympathised with because he obviously realized the implications of his actions and he was even 'willing' to give up his life for it, it was that serious an issue for him. As someone mentioned earlier, from his POV it may not have been a selfish act at all. What he thought before attempting suicide, none of us know.

Can't believe some people think that they know enough about Andre and his situation to be able to call him a coward.

I don't care how much of a **** he is or isn't, someone attempting suicide is an incredibly sad situation and people should remember that.

To call the majority of people who end up in a situation where they are seriously considering taking their own life a coward shows a total absence of understanding on the subject, and in fact borders on complete ignorance. I would invite those who would take such a course to undergo such an experience themselves, and then see if they don't revise their opinions.
