All-Time World XIs: Discussion Thread

Once again, CW members vote for Victor Trumper as an opener. He may have played the majority of his innings as an opener but he was far more effective in the middle order.
Consider these stats.
Trumper's average when opening: 33.00
Trumper's average when batting 3-6: 53.07
Having him open in the ATG World B Team is a travesty - particularly partnering a player whose opening average was also in the low 30s.

"When Victor Trumper got out the light seems to die from the Australian Innings. The Eagle is gone and now crows and daws"
- Neville Cardus

"When he came he opened the mind to a new vision of what batting could be. He lifted it heights never known before, gave us thrills we didn't knew existed "
- Johnny Mayes

"He is the most perfect batsman in his scoring methods I have ever seen. He makes the orthodox stroke quite after the best models, and in addition he has several strokes of his own which are hopeless for others to attempt"
- Jack Hobbs

"There have been only one. One Victor Trumper "
- Wilfred Rhodes (the only one of 16 cricketers who rated Bradman higher)

"He's a poet of cricket. He has poets extra sense of touch and feelings. Trumper can play with his bat, a cricket ball as Paganini played his violin"
- CB Fry

"Victor Trumper stands alone as the Greatest Batsman of All Time"
- Hugh Trumble

"In future years we may develop Great players with great deeds, but one feels somehow we will never see a Victor again"
- Frank Iredale

"I have one Great satisfaction about Victor as a cricketer - I never saw him get old"
- Charlie MaCartney

"I am not fit to tie his shoelaces"
- Clem Hill

Also I’ve voted Davidson, but if Garner or Lindwall is close someone tell me. Those 3 could be a different order on a different day.
Also lol I just realised Chappell hadn’t been selected. Big almost miss there.

So we’re choosing him to open so the light will die from the innings? Early on too, one might add. (average of 50 balls when opening)

So Macartney was happy he died
