AB De Villiers- The Complete Batsman?

gettingbetter

State Vice-Captain
Just watching De Villiers bat today, it struck me how well-rounded a player he's become. Pretty much any criticism that is generally applied to a batsman can't be said of De Villiers.

He has no obvious technical weaknesses anymore and doesn't get out repeatedly in the same way. He can smash spinners and fast bowlers equally.
He can score runs when the going is tough, and he can cash in when the going's good.
He doesn't look especially vulnerable early on, and he can bat for long, long periods.
He can stick around and absorb pressure, and he can score quickly when he feels like it.
He's quick between the wickets, is possibly the world's greatest fielder, and is a quality player in both formats.

Over the past two years, he now averages over 60. Can anyone actually think of a criticism it's possible to level at him, or is it safe to say he's pretty much the perfect batsman?
His attitude is much better now (not saying he had a bad attitude previously), but he has said that he wants to be the best batsman in the world. To add to this, a Cricinfo article says that he wants to be a specialist - batting solely at no. 5 and not keeping. The latter could be detrimental to SA cricket once Boucher retires.

The only fault I can say about him at the moment, is that he doesn't look like a classical batsmen. Not really even a fault.

Personally, he won't be an all-time great, just in really good nick right now. Might be up there with SA's best of his time eventually, though.

No proof. He was mediocre in his last tour of India in tests except during the second test, when conditions more or less suited his style of batting, he unleashed a glorious innings.

Sounds like you have been just hired by him for PR.

Many. I absolutely find his stance and feet movement (initially) as clumsy and unorthodox. His backlift is wierd and he looks every bit edgy at the crease till he gets to 50.

Don't get me wrong. All these can be papered over if he continues to score and contribute to SA cricket for the coming years. I love the chap. But he is not exactly my cuppa when it comes to test cricket.

deVilliers is Awesome. Love watching the guy bat, not one of the more elegant batsmen going around, but he is good to watch all the same.

He definitely has a look of class about him when he bats now. Is an important member of the S.A. team.

Whats the logic behind this statement? The lad is just 25 and he has 10 more years - he can have an average of 65 or 50 100s - who knows?

Or he could ride this run of form and then regress toward the mean. Who knows - exactly.

The logic is just from watching him bat. Has all the hallmarks of a guy who looks good but most of the time flatters to deceive, in my view.

His stats in Tests since the 2007 World Cup are outstanding.

Bizzarely, unlike some of his contemporaries, his stats against Bangladesh actually decrease his average significantly in this time.

Bangladesh aside, South Africa have played New Zealand, West Indies and Australia at home, and Pakistan, India, England and Australia away.

de Villiers, in 20 Tests, has scored 1732 runs @ 64.14, with 6 100s and 7 50s.

In India, England and Australia his average in this period is over 60.

In the 6 tests against Australia, he's scored 600 runs at 75.

His ambition is to become the best batsman in the world. With numbers like the ones he's put up in the last 2 years, he's well on the way to accomplishing that aim.

How do you find out stats like that?

It's just that I would like to compare his stats for the last two years with Michael Clarkes.

Thank you to both. I'll have a look and see if I can work it out. Apparently, AB has an average of 60 and I want to know what Clarke's is (for the last 2 years)
