No way that Archer should play unless they want to break him again

Bumrah looks crocked to me and shouldn’t play either
This. England need Archer in Australia so he should be sent on a holiday this week.

Bumrah looked a shadow of bowler he was at Headingley, without too much bowling you'd say he is carrying an injury and shouldn't play.

no england fans want nepo baby in the team or think we will do anything other than look like a big stiff idiot in australia.

root will fail again because he can't help fiddling with ones outside off stump with an angled bat, which is suicide on the extra bouncy australian pitches.

I don't think Crawley should be picked but he was always going to be in the X1 when the Ashes starts. He does have a good record vs Aus but I still wouldn't pick him.
He doesn't bowl and hardly spends any time batting and fields at slip.Nice one if you can get it.
I think Root has gone up a level and I think he will deliver this time.

Despite the pitches and the balls being much less scary for batters than before, opening is still a tough gig so I don’t see any alternative to Crawley coming now. OK we had a one-off Test against Zimbabwe, but India was never going to be a time to try anything funky, I think Bethell possibly getting a go somewhere in the top 3 would have been as funky as it got, but he was in the IPL (a cynic might suggest that England wanted him to stay there even if it meant sitting on the bench as it would avoid him staking a claim for Pope or Crawley’s spot)

they know the gig is up when he finally gets the chop, as he will never in a million years score enough runs in county cricket to force his way back into the reckoning.

Agreeing with the sentiment on Bumrah. Unless it was a genuine issue with the soft outfield at OT, I don't see how he recovers his edge in the 4.5 days of rest he's had. Feels stupid to say but we might almost be better off with a fresh pair of legs this late in the series. There's no replacement for Bumrah's skills but if this is going to be the road that trends suggest then that gap in skills might be compensated somewhat with workrate and just the general security of seeing the game through with a full set of bowlers. Hard decision to make though.

The only way I see him getting the chop under the current leadership is if he gets injured and his replacement makes hay, obviously Dan Lawrence was never going to be that, but Bethell did well in NZ at 3, what if he ****s his finger again but the replacement has a Bradmanesque series?

even this group cannot keep justifying selection of a bloke barely averaging 30 who makes a decent score once every couple of series and hey, you know what, if they do? they deserve to keep falling short in the big series.

I didn’t see a lot of day 4, but from the highlights Bumrah seemed to be back at 135+ late in the innings?

Or was he just cranking it up for easy tailender wickets

I’d definitely pick him, Siraj and Akash. Prasidh can **** off.

India don't play a test series until October after this and thats against the West Indies.

unless Bumrah is legitimately broken down then I don't see how they can leave him out. sends a weird message about priorities if he's good to go and sits on the bench.

No way Archer plays to back up having looked knackered trying to bowl on a road all week this week. Carse was off colour in Manchester but I don’t think it was a pitch that helped him- if he’s genuinely fit I’d pick him, he’ll go okay at the Oval.

I think we should be very careful with Stokes and if we were brave enough to rest him, I’d go with

Crawley
Duckett
Pope
Root
Brook
Bethell
Smith
Atkinson
Woakes
Carse
Tongue

Long tail, 4 genuine seamers, two part time offies.
