It could be a case of looking a better option when unpicked. He averages 30 in first class matches in India and all matches he has played in tests are on spinning wickets except for the one innings vs Australia. If he was such an ace, the Indian management would have certainly played him.

He's done well in the first innings on flattish decks multiple times, two games at Dharamshala vs Australia and England, Vishakhapatnam vs England was another one. This sounds like a desperate attempt to somehow find sense in a bad decision from the team management.
