What's up with munro's first class numbers? 52 @98 is insane. Also why was he only given one test?
Generally regarded that his technique wouldn't stand up to scrutiny in tests. Zinzan always used to argue that he was really hard done by in not getting picked more. And maybe he was. But given how trash he tended to look against quality pace in ODI's, you can't help but think he would've been out of his depth in tests.

20 years ago, one of his Radio Sport bits was the "Parnell Boys Choir" which was supposed to be a dig at gay people for some reason, looks pretty sinister now.

He did play in a particularly good era for batting in NZ domestic cricket, at a home ground that often took the piss in this regard. There was a theory for quite some time that his runs were effectively worth much less because he wasn't batting in the top four where techniques were tested against the new ball, but he moved up the order and continued to plunder runs for fun anyway.

He was certainly unlucky not to get more of a go, but "unlucky" and "likely to succeed" are not the same thing.

any reason given for central and northern combining their A sides for the wellington A game?
Auckland A looked at the waterlogged ground after torrential rain had put about 50mm on it in two hours on that first afternoon of the tourney, then badly underestimated the volcanic soil in Taupo.

More dopey NZC managerial stuff down in Queenstown that same day, with that attack of Tickner/Rae/Sears put forward to thud it into the middle of the pitch on the slowest clay used in NZ.

There might have been a discussion between NZC and Otago cricket about which one of their seamers would stay in Queenstown and which two go to New Plymouth for Ford Trophy - I suggest that Otago would have wanted their captain and all-rounder. And told Rae that the game time vs WIndies would be good for his career profile ....

Ford Trophy squads announced.

Experienced Brownlie + Devcich return for ND. Watling keeping so no place for Bocock who had a good Ford Trophy last season.

Munro listed to play for Auckland, so hasn't left for BBL yet.

CD announcement says both Clarkson and Leopard will be bowling this year. “They have both been getting a lot of overs under their belt and are coming off strong white-ball form in the Chapple Cup and Central Districts A games so they are tracking well”

Finn Allen not listed for Wellington. Fletcher + Bhula + Colson + Troy Johnson preferred.

Strong Canterbury side includes Latham + Nicholls + Henry.

Nathan Smith not named in Otago Ford Trophy side, but not playing in Queenstown. Injured? 12th man in Queenstown?

Liked for this. Won't make it as biffers-alone but if can somehow stay fit enough to bowl near the best of their ability then would be valuable allrounders.

I've heard that's because NZ A is going to be rotated. You can see some of the ones playing this game released to Ford trophy. Right way to go about. Got to provide opportunities for others, this is the best time to do that. Finn Allen is concussed I think. Out for a short period.

Joey Field set to debut for CD today. Finally we get to see a young one included.

Here is a good opportunity for sides to slot in few NZ under 19 reps but none of them take it. That is very disappointing. There are so many players missing at the moment and never a better chance to get some young ones in but the very limited short term thinking of all associations is disappointing.

NZC should make it mandatory for all associations to pick at least 1 or 2 NZ under 19 reps for each format. This is the only way to get some good experience for our promising youth players. What do they lose playing a player or two in ford or T20 sides? NZ is probably the only nation in the world that doesn't pick under national 19 reps consistently. Very backward thinking. Even a mega tourney like IPL have it mandatory to pick minimum number of under 19 reps.

Curious case of Popli. He scored over 1000 runs in first class in 2015-16 season. 3 hundres and 7 fifties in 17 innings. That was staggering number of runs and was voted domestic player of the year then. Since then he has just not been able to score enough to keep his place. How did a player from a form such as that folded away and as of now struggling to find a place in the team? Still averaging healthy 37 in first class cricket but lot of runs came in the 15-16 season ie more than half his career runs in one year.

Rutherford's List A form over the last three years has been climbing. I think he is playing his best cricket in this format. Is there a chance for him to sneak past Guptill as an opener? Interesting to see if he's going to open batting in ford trophy. Maybe they'll pull him up for NZ A after this round.

Young has been quite consistent from the 4th year of his domestic career. If Devon is not going to debut for one day then Young definitely deserves it. His one day stats are outstanding for NZ A. I think Devon, Young and Rutherford should be in the mix for one day this season.
