Who Is Cullen?
http://aus.cricinfo.com/link_to_database/PLAYERS/AUS/C/CULLEN_DJ_02046480/

There he is. 20 years of age (21 next month), talented right-arm finger spinner. Took 43 wickets in ten matches @ 30.37 this year, in his debut season, which left him 8th in the wicket taking list. It's understandable that you haven't heard of him, because he only came into his own towards the end of the season, when he picked up match figures of 7/98, 8/161 and 7/145 in the last three games, making up more than half of his wickets for the year.

Obviously he's a long way from a replacement for Warne, but I'm more excited about him than any other spinner in the country, and probably any bowler aside from Tait.

It wasn't that he was a sore loser, he was just devastated by the loss. It fight back from an almost impossible position (several times) and to have victory within reach, only to have it snatched away - crushing.
That's what I said.

Cullen does look good aye?

And Tait is amazing... how long til an injury though? :-O
I don't think he HAS to have an injury. If he makes the Australian side, I'm worried about his consistency.

they reckon cullen has a "doosra" of sorts, but opens himself up heaps when he bowls it and therefore is not all that difficult to pick. still, something to watch out for i guess.

i'm going to go on a lil diatribe here, coz i got sweet f.a. else to do.
Good Things To Take Out Of 2004/05
- nsw's prominence without their international players or bevan, primarily due to jacques thornley and the underrated stuart clark.
- south australiata's competitiveness as the season wore on, thanks to tait proving he's not a one season wonder, cullen's emergence and glimpses of callum ferguson's class.
- queensland just being class again, mitchell johnson stringing games together towards the end of the year, hopes' general form, and the bringing about of the best pun ever in sport as heard on the abc last night. "Queensland had to put their faith in Hopes and Love" :D
- tasmania's ING victory, wright's consistency and the increasing depth in bowling... and bevan.
- for victoria, one would have thought very little. white and hodge with the bat, lewis with the ball. a harsh person might say the dropping of roach. catchya, stinkbag!
- western australia's teasing of us all. young batsmen continue to bob up and make runs while casson has shown more than enough.

Things That Can Be Left Behind in 2004/05

- greg blewett's year
- mark cosgrove's diet
- joe dawes' birth certificate. if he lost it, he'd be on a plane to england later this year. ditto bichel and bevan.
- shane harwood's luck with injuries.
- brad hogg's hissyfit about not getting picked in the last inconsequential game of the year
- inconsistency of the queensland top order
- bevan not mentioning his team at all in any interview he's done after his big year, and just talking about how he wanted to try different things this year and focus on himself more.
- matthew inness' career in victoria
- brad knowles' non-selection in the pura cup team. :D (the personal vendetta is back!)
- ryan campbell
- mark edmondson's radar...because it was clearly off target throughout this season

North needs to convert some of those half centuries into tons. He made lots of good starts, but to be considered for higher honours he needs to make more hundreds.
Clarke got into the side with a first class average under 40, so if the N.S.W. madia want you in the side, you have a good chance, and if Mark Waugh becomes selector you can be assured that anyone not from N.S.W. will not get looked at and Qlders have no chance.

Great post, and nothing one-eyed about it. Top effort.

btw, Brad Hogg has nothing to complaign about, he should thank his lucky stars everytime he gets selected for Australia, just because the W.A. selectors have sense, doesn't mean he can feel he is good enough.

sounds like you great faith in selectors Wright :D

Clarke did score a century on debut...

AND I am one of few who rate Brad Hogg.

Century on debut...big deal.

Blewett got a century in his first 2 tests, but had a shocking test record.

Clarke's first class career average is 38.82. He has 13 100s & 14 50s in 103 innings, not a bad conversion rate, but with an average of 38.82, that means there is a lot of small scores, and not many large ones.

So should North do a Katich and move to Sydney?

If Mark Waugh becomes a selector everyone should.
Oh come on. The head selector at the moment is a legend of Queensland cricket and Kasprowicz is still in the team despite calls from various quarters for him to be dropped for Lee, Hayden survived a significant patch of poor form and Katich was dropped on the back of a match saving century to give Andrew Symonds a go. Is he biased as well?

P.S. please note that I do NOT think that he is, I just find it really irritating when people crap on about NSW bias despite the fact that there is absolutely no evidence whatsoever supporting its existance... none of the selectors are even from NSW!

I'm basing my comments on what Mark Waugh has said on Queensland being biased at the selection table. When a team makes 7 finals in a row, and the last 2 One Day finals and come close in previous seasons, they must be doing something right and therefore deserve selection.

That depends. New South Wales were probably deserved winners this year, but I don't think any of them warrant immediate selection into the international side. Jaques is probably second in line for an openers spot in my books now, and Bracken probably third in line for a pace bowlers spot. Thornley is a fair way back in terms of middle order selection too. Even if they win next year as well, nothing will necessarily change.

However, the only double standard I have seen recently is the Symonds/Lee situation. Symonds was picked over an established player in good form because he was dominating in the ODIs against the opposition in question, and Lee found himself in the same situation (only his dominance was more pronounced), and was not picked. Even this however has much more to do with the selectors learning from prior mistakes and public pressure to keep Kasprowicz in the team than any kind of bias. Honestly I think the selectors are doing a great job at the moment.
