18th June - FINAL - India vs Pakistan

Niall

International Coach
A lot depends on the pitch, if flat India should win as their batting is much superior, if not, then they are still favs as the bowling is excellent, but obviously Pakistan's opportunity increases.

I think Pakistan need to chase to have a chase to have a chance. I could see them falling in a heap in the first innings trying to force a score which would be out of a lot of their batsman comfort zone.

This'll be a great event for a final. Hoping Pakistan wins purely because they've come from nowhere this tourney and because the teeth gnashing on here would be beyond belief.

***** has to choose again between his second and third/ fourth/ fifth team.

Tbf *****' system as detailed on the most recent podcast clearly dictates that he supports India here

Personally would like to see Pakistan win, as the underdog

This Champions Trophy has seen some one-sided matches (even one-sided upsets). Hope the final is a cracking contest (which finals rarely are).

It'll be a very one sided final too. India will win. I say that because Pak has given their fans some hope and as is their wont they will now break those hopes in spectacular fashion. Mark my words.

Let's be honest though, if India makes it, them beating us in a final would be incredibly sweet for them and would go a long way to making up for all the WC losses.
Okay

but champions trophy doesn't have anything to do with India's 'World Cup' streak. (as you may know)

Before this 2017 champions trophy, Pakistan had a 2-1 superior record against india in this competition, so winning here bears no correlation to the world cups, whether T20 or ODI WC. It doesn't impact India's streak in any way( for the time being at least). People are mixing & confusing separate things together. Pakistan last 'beat India in CT only some yrs ago, whereas in WC it has never ever happened, which is a miracle kind of thing given Pakistan's overall record against India.,.

If it's another flat pitch, Pakistan are going to get caned. Pakistan's chances come to the fore if they get a slow pitch like the ENG vs PAK match. In a batting flex show, India are going to win.

And it's important to point out that India's been quite lucky to be in the position it's in right now.. Results have fallen so soo favourably..

First Pakistan beats South Africa (unexpectedly) and this gives India the opportunity to.. not only knock South Africa out but also to finish 1st in the group and avoid England. Then England beats Australia which ensures that India don't have to face the Aussies in the semis. And Bangladesh beats NZ, allowing India to avoid not only the Strong Aussies but also the relatively good NZ. To cap it off, it was all expected to be a India England final and no doubt England would have been strong favourites. But thanks to Pakistan, India got to avoid England again!

If events had panned out normally, India probably would've been out by now or would have totally lost in the final against England on a flat oval pitch given the latter's immense batting might & depth. Only Pakistan could have done the unexpected against England (& not really Sri Lanka) and had the right pitch to do it on. The reason India now stand a 50% chance of winning CT is because of all these teams... 'indirectly helping India out'. It's been a collective effort. This was never really India's CT to win tbh. It was pretty unlikely India would actually win (and they lost to Sri Lanka of all teams). So losing in the final is not a huge problem. It changes nothing and doesn't impact any streak. India have nothing to lose. They can, however, do well in the final and come off with a relatively 'unexpected CT glory' and the same applies to Pakistan.

It doesn't affect the main talking point of the rivalry (wc streak). If people are going to including everything, might as well include the head to head record as well! Pakistan has won 70+ games, while India has won only about 50 games in the head to head encounters. Pakistan is well ahead in the rivalry, (and also in Tests!). But nobody talks about that, and focus is only on WC streak because it's like miraculous kind of thing that keeps going on & on, so India really doesn't have anything to lose neither do Pakistan but both have a chance to come off with a surprise win, more so Pakistan.

India has had such a favourable run that basically ONLY played an Asia Cup!!

Teams faced so far-

South Africa (renowned for knockouts...)
Pakistan
Sri Lanka (who beat India)

Bangladesh
Pakistan again!

lol.

There's a couple of points worth raising here.

First, I haven't listened to the podcast.

Secondly, although ***** has previously stated his position, he needs to restate it all the time, because he supports different teams depending on different situations, and because having to do so will annoy him.

Isn't that kind of how tournaments work? You can't just go around playing teams that you think are worthy. I get what you are saying but surely it's not the first time a team may win a tournament through being in the right place at the right time?

Yeah tjb's logic actually works here, we've had an easier run than what most predicted.

to be honest, in a way it's been disappointing. I wish there'd been a game against Aus or Eng or maybe even NZ in the knockouts.. It has taken away from the quality.

Nobody is going to remember Champions Trophy once it's scrapped again so rather than doing well in any way whatsoever, wish there'd been certain expected big games. It's been just Asia Cup, which India plays every now & then anyway. Unfortunately will have to wait for two years to have the chance to play those certain nations again... in an official tournament, especially in knockout game(s). (In hindsight Im missing those games more). Ind v Aus in semi final and/or Ind v Eng in final would have been special (even though India would have struggled to win either). Now it's ind v pak again, which tends to be a tedious game. Too much hype & little quality action. Usually it's not a fun game from spectating point of view. Plus you see players crumbling under pressure. And this CT there's been far too many one sided games. Hardly any that went to the wire.. and toss has been a big factor.

However, from Pakistan's point of view, its been a far more complete journey. So thats what I am missing from Indian point of view.

So from this perspective, the next world cup is going to be simply amazing as all teams will play each other.

I don't think so. After a long time, many Indian fans are actually ok with Pakistan winning this considering the difficult times they have faced. For India, it is just one more trophy to the cabinet.

Australia have a rightful claim here because they lose 1 out of 3 games and were knocked out with 2 incomplete matches. But New Zealand had 2 completed games and lost 2. I am sorry but to say New Zealand are relatively good but facing Bangladesh is lucky is simply going by names on paper instead of actually watching the games and forming an assessment based on that. If you watched NZ's games, other than KW and Guptill and Southee to an extent with the new ball, they've been awful and the worst team of this tournament easily.
