    Biggest six

Well I can't think of anyone currently who consistently bowls 150+. There are a few in the mid to high 140's who may occasionally get to 150. Maybe 10 years ago not. But go back 35 years and you'd have had Lillee, Thomson, Pascoe, Hogg, Hurst, Roberts, Holding, Daniel, Croft, Willis, Imran...

    Biggest six

My "wild theory" is that sprinters try to be the quickest sprinters but bowlers try to be the best bowlers rather than the quickest. I agree, I live on the edge...

    Biggest six

Ok, so Thommo circa 1975 was quicker than Holding circa 1980? Ok, I'll believe that. Reverse evolution that kind of proves my point.

The fastest recorded ball was turned down to fine leg for a non-descript single. Just shows that being quickest doesn't necessarily help a bowler, so why strive for it? And that ball was bowled, what over ten years ago? So what's happened? According to your theory lots of bowlers should be...

    Biggest six

If the tale of athletic achievement is one of constant progress, can you please explain the current state of heavyweight boxing when compared with how it was almost 40 years ago in the mid-70s when Ali, Frasier, Foreman, Holmes and Norton were around? If there were prize money or gold medals...

*** Official New Zealand Domestic Cricket 2011/2012 ***

Sorry to hear of the death of Peter Sharp. For foreign folk he was a regular on radio commentary here, based out of Christchurch. He was easily my favourite local commentator with a good voice for radio. Importantly, he had a cricket background and you felt he actually did some research on...

Average players suddenly becoming very good

Muralitharan? Not sure but his stats after his first 2-3 years didn't suggest someone about to break most records in the book. As well as the other Sri Lankan batsmen mentioned, Hashan Tillakaratne had a real late-career surge. VVS Laxman? Again, I think maybe folk thought his early years...

Not sure it's a great move for Jarvis though. Blokes of his pace can certainly do well in NZ cricket - see Aldridge, McSkimming, Arnel, Mason etc. But it doesn't necessarily set them up for international stuff. Maybe he should go play grade cricket in Australia on flat decks.

Players that initially promised but eventually disappointed

Wow. You're hard to please. 259 wickets at 26. When I saw Gillespie take 7-for-something on his first tour of England I thought he was a gangly kid who didn't really know what he was doing. I really never dreamed he'd turn into the fantastic performer he was.

Players that initially promised but eventually disappointed

Vinod Kambli probably takes the cake, though he did still end up with an average of over 50... Ramnaresh Sarwan, Andrew Strauss, Herschell Gibbs and Michael Slater all kicked off their careers looking more like 50-ish players than the 40-42 they ended up with (Strauss not looking likely to...

    Biggest six

Biggest six I've seen at the ground was Astle's final 6 off Caddick during his 222. Went over the stand over a straight mid-off never to be seen again. Sounded like a rifle shot...

Which Was the Worst Possible Umpiring Decision That You Have Seen

Parore was asked about that one in the press conference afterwards. Didn't really dispute that he knew it wasn't out, but pointed out that in the four months since the test in Perth against Australia, he'd caught ten stone cold out which had not been given. It's a truism that everyone...

Can Ramnaresh Sarwan play for West Indies again?

Logically, no. This being West Iindies cricket, however....

Why does no one seem to consider fielding when picking ATG teams?

Hadlee was a **** fielder? Really? He was a regular at gully for NZ, and took a couple of absolute screamers there. I think one year the "sports photo of the year" was a great shot of him catching Gower, full length horizontal airborne, one-handed.... I've googled it but can't find anything...

***Official*** Pakistan and England in UAE

To be fair to CWB, he has changed his tune. A month ago he was only rubbishing Bell, now he's doing it to Pietersen as well. I don't understand how Cook and Trott have avoided his eagle eye...

    Players that had quick declines....

His batting average in that time was probably about 25 though so he was still almost worth a spot... And I think the other test in there was against England at Edgbaston when he bowled as good a delivery as you could imagine to dismiss Nasser Hussain.... NASSER HUSSAIN BOWLED BY...

    Players that had quick declines....

Jesse Ryder has a bit of a job to ensure he doesn't go into this category as well. Simon Doull had a fairly tragic last half dozen tests - saw his average go out from 27 to 29.

***Official*** Zimbabwe in New Zealand 2012

Alan Mac. Wadds is fine with the names. As Flem noted, he's given us a "Chigumbavka" and a "Chagumba" since the one-time Zimbabwe skipper came out to bat.

***Official*** Zimbabwe in New Zealand 2012

Since the cricket is too gruesome to comment on, just how embarassing is the commentary (on the radio...) We've had Matsinkerri, Matsinkurri, Chigumbava, and Chakuba. Good on him for getting Taylor correct!
