    Pace in the past

The back foot rule went out in 1962... a little before Thommo's time. In various other threads I have queried the assumption that bowlers have become quicker over time. Just on the basis that it clearly isn't true in the past twenty years, and probably not the past 35 years. So why do we...

***Official*** New Zealand in Bangladesh & Sri Lanka 2013

That last ten overs seemed to take out options two and three from my list above. So now it's dull draw or will Bangladesh try and make a game of it? They must know deep down that they really can't bowl out sides on reasonable wickets in 50-odd overs, so if I were them I'd probably just try to...

So what do we think ? 1 - fizzle-out draw 2 - NZ to keep getting the occasional wicket to keep it interesting, but Bangladesh get just enough to be safe (knowing NZ's record with these things, rain will come along in the last hour just when NZ are closing in) 3 - Bangladesh to collapse, easy...

Not sure what Bangladesh think they're doing here, and I know they still have Nasir and Gazi to come, but their approach seems pretty helter-skelter. Running the risk of being all out 320 after which NZ will then have plenty of time to "bat once and bat big".

To be fair to Bracewell, he should have had Tamim out twice today...

Does anyone know what the NZ team are doing for this week? 7 days is a long time between matches, particularly in somewhere that isn't noted for its tourist attractions.

Also worth remembering Reiffel was a damn fine bowler. And averaged mid-high 20s witth the bat - a very under-rated cricketer.

    Afghanistan's Opportunities

I found this an interesting read. Tim Wigmore: Where do Afghanistan go next? | Cricinfo Magazine | ESPN Cricinfo The attitude of full ICC members towards the associates just makes me so sad/mad/frustrated.... hopefully there's enough momentum within Afghanistan to avoid a Kenya situation.

Better Test stats than FC stats

I always thought Barrington was a bit of a dasher at first class level, played all the shots, but in test cricket with 5 days not 3 to take advantage of, he put away his shots and turned out to be better as a defensive player than in "normal" mode.

Fantastic effort. Those three seamers really put everything into it. Also pleased for Masakadza to score runs in a winning cause. Hope something good comes out of this. If they don't play again for ten months or so as I think the current schedule suggests it will be a huge shame.

Chatara's last over to Misbah was absurdly bad, but that was a good 'un. Pitch playing a bit up and down, this is a big ask for the tail-enders...

Giving away far too many easy singles. Got to force them to play some shots...

*Official* Pakistan v South Africa in UAE

Pakistan batting line-up is in serious need of an overhaul. No-one apart from Younis and Misbah are in form / good enough (take your pick). If they're being undone by Chatara, Vitori and Panyangara on pretty reasonable wickets, what chance have they against Steyn, Morkel and Philander? Are...

Any chance of a crowd of more than 100 for tomorrow's play d'you think? Would be great to see a large crowd supporting the Zimbabwe team. (Of course,I know deep down that that awkward sod Misbah will see them home, with the help of a flukey 30 from one of the tail-enders, but we can hope....)

    Best slip fielders

Bryan Young was a very good slip fielder for a former keeper. My dad swears Bobby Simpson was in a class of his own, but it's hard to imagine anyone better than Mark Waugh. Carl Hooper was a good call by someone earlier too.
