Sangha looks to be the best organised young batsman to me but his issue is that he’s really only had a few months of consistent success

That might be all he needs at this point in time to get the nod. Konstas got picked on less. Very good time to be an in form domestic batsman.

IMO the Ashes selection should depend heavily on early shield rounds. Smith, Head, Webster, Carey are all locks but there are 3 other spots up for grabs

I was thinking about Konstas, and to a lesser extent Green, yesterday. I can't remember, in my 30 odd years watching cricket, an Aussie batsman that looks so out of their depth and underprepared for the task at hand.

Its like watching any young West Indian batter debut over the last decade. It looks like fc cricket has not done its job, or has not been allowed to do its job as they picked him too early. He is technically and mentally unsuitable at the moment.

Of course, and the big caveat is that he is facing a masterful opening attack in the hardest region to face the new ball in the world. Maybe on a flat track in Australia or England he'd be OK?

It’s pretty clear now that Green should be batting down the order. I’m a big fan of his because he’s dominated shield attacks, but I don’t know how he can be selected if he can’t bowl and bat at six. Webster is just much better than him

Konstas desperately needs a full FC season

Nah it's not nearly that deep. In the case of Konstas he's simply not ready. He's barely a first class cricketer let alone a Test cricketer. Horrendous selection. Green just came back from a long injury lay off and is clearly in very poor form. Probably shouldn't have been picked either.

There's definitely a lack of domestic batsmen ready to step up though

Oh good, a classic bat off. That’s worked well

I know it is a different format but I think Australia might be better off picking more "proper" batsmen in their ODI teams (rather than allrounders and T20 sloggers). It would just give the likes of Kostas, McSweeney, Patterson a taste of international cricket pressure outside of test cricket.
It only worked for about 20 years

For the ashes. Interested to see how this situation develops. Also seeing Josh Phillipe the test opener being thrown around.

I see on a certain forum people making comments about how the ball Konstas got out to wasn't there to be hit. Just been watching a lot of seventies and eighties highlights and shots played with practically identical technique against similar balls in similar game situations are dime-a-dozen.

Averages of key Shield players in the last two seasons:

Very concerning. Webster and Carey are already in the team, while a lot of the players with higher averages have spent a lot of time in second grade. Lots of players higher in the run tallies averaging mid-30's or worse too.

sure but when you're out of nick and have to face like six overs as an opener to get through to the dawn just leave it

So Sam Konstas now has the 2nd worst average for an Aussie Opener since WW2 (min 4 Tests)

Gavin Stevens (1959-60):
4 Tests, 112 runs @ 16.00

Sam Konstas: 4 Tests, 146 runs @ 18.25
