5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

To be honest I went largely by memory. I went to the 1992 Oval test and saw the 2ws backed up by Mushy. Serious cricket watching times. I always hated people bigging up the next successful trundler in county cricket when five minutes watching them told you that they would be useless in test cricket. England selectors would still make that mistake for most of that decade before wising up.

I don’t envy the current selectors vis a vis the current bowlers. It’s a tough gig given the surfaces they have played on. Crawley however…..
Yep.I think that's one of the reasons why Nas/Fletcher wanted a battery of fast bowlers.
Agreed about Crawley!!!

I think they're desperate to give Bethell a go so probably inked him in as soon as Stokes was ruled about before even thinking about team balance. Then figured out which four bowlers they wanted afterwards.
Bethell certainly has more of a future in this team, that he can bowl spin at all probably gave them the excuse they needed

"For now, he will remain with the England team, once again led by Ollie Pope. There is a larger room in the England hotel set aside for the captain, which Stokes has not given over to Pope. That probably says plenty about who remains in charge."

Will Pope be England captain when Stokes retires? **** it, will Pope even be in the team when Stokes retires?

I have been asking for Kuldeep this whole series - but this is the worst place for him given Surrey has often played without any spinner and its all seam bowlers. You need a minimum of four seamers for this wicket so I think it's going to be Shardul unfortunately.
Pick the best bowlers ffs

India continually says “ooh, it’s England so we must pick seamers” and it doesn’t work because they aren’t good enough

Yeah but three spinners are a bit overkill. And I think Jadeja and Sundar need to play.
They can pretty much hold their spots as batsmen at this point (Jadeja essentially is). When Pant was keeping wicket and batting 5 they definitely had space for Kuldeep, 3 quicks + the two spin bowling all rounders.

Who cares how it looks to have 3 spinners in England. Sundar and Jadeja don't quite make one whole, effective spinner between them. 60-75% is about the best you're getting from them in these conditions. So you want those sort of lukewarm returns, all so you can play a Thakur or a Prasidh/Kambhoj. It's overcomplicating what should be a simple selection. You don't win crucial Tests by hedging your bets. You go in with your best team on paper and let the chips fall where they will. Do a mental recalibration and start thinking of Sundar and Jadeja as batsmen who can more than roll their arms over; it's what we've been hankering for forever, right? Batsmen who can bowl? Play Kuldeep as your main spinner and let everyone else pivot around him.

India need to win this test so yeah pick your best bowler ffs.

The alternatives are Kambooj who looked poor in his first test, Thakur who might hit a few runs but wont take many wickets, Arshdeep who has has never played a test and Krishna who is Krishna. Kuldeep is a better bowler than all 4 so the likely exclusion is so bad IMO.

Amusingly he is a better bat than at least 2 of those 4 and arguably just as good as Kambooj .

If India decide not to pick Kuldeep because England are going with Bethell and Root, that's a tremendous piece of 4D chess from England
