5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

we may all be over rating k dawg here and he could well be useless on these decks but i just want to see him have a go at this point
It's crazy pressure to perform alright. He can't be unaware of the clamor surrounding him but it shouldn't ever have come to this stage to begin with. Ever wonder what setting someone up to fail looks like? Not making excuses for him prematurely and he'll deliver if he's good enough but it's far from the ideal scenario for a bowler to be thrown into. Spinners in particular "grow" into a series rather than getting deployed as crack units at the final hurdle.

Half the English lineup has never faced him. They may struggle to pick him, more so the tail. So he will be valuable regardless of pitch conditions. But we have retards in management.

I hope they don't add a batter to replace Thakur because of the look of the pitch..

Thakur, Arshdeep and Nair shouldn't be considered, honestly speaking. Pick Jadeja as the 5th batter and Kuldeep as the 2nd spinner and bring back Prasidh. At least compared to Thakur and Arshdeep he's shown he can get wickets.

Yep, it's currently chucking it down where I am 50 miles West and it's heading that way. Should get some cricket in later this afternoon and can play till after 7pm. But looks like they'll be adding overs to Days 2-5 and Sunday not looking great either.

Think I'd be tempted to bowl first.

Day 5 scenario.
India batting, no chance of a result after plenty of rain. Washington Sundar batting.
England refuse to shake hands as Bethell has taken 4 wickets in the innings.
Pope says to Washington that he has to give away his wicket to allow the young all rounder his first test 5 for. Then we can shake as you value personal milestones so much. No problem.

I reckon a three and a half day test is still enough for England to not really care and lose by an innings as India rack up a big score against the worst bowling attack england have put out since before Anderson.

I am in London, less than 2 miles from the Oval now and we have had significant rain over the last few hours and more is forecast. Maybe it eases off to get some play in this afternoon. The groundstaff will have a lot of work to do to get it playable when it does stop raining.

There's not much rain after today. Upto 32 overs can be made up on days 2 to 5. So we'll still get 4.5 days of play or even close to 5 days play.

Draw only a possibility if the pitch becomes a dead road.

The rain radar looks alright from about 11 to half 12, so the covers will just about be ready to come off and it'll piss it down again. Rain should have cleared by about 2pm though, so hopefully get some play this afternoon.

It's a cloudy day tomorrow too (assuming we don't get that much play today), so could be a decent toss to win and bowl first.

They can pretty much hold their spots as batsmen at this point (Jadeja essentially is). When Pant was keeping wicket and batting 5 they definitely had space for Kuldeep, 3 quicks + the two spin bowling all rounders.
jaedjas exceptional batting exploits have really covered up what a complete non entity he is with the ball in england. i wouldn't even be considering his bowling at this point.

Jadeja and Washington are batters first. Any wickets they take overseas should be seen as a bonus. When Gambhir and Gill start seeing that, they will realise they need to pick four frontline bowlers, otherwise I give India little chance of taking 20 wickets against a lineup batting till no.10

Englands bowling tactics this series seem rather self destructive : four seamers bowled into the ground on lifeless pitches, including the captain, and as a result we go into the decider with 2 bowlers returning from injury whove hardly played, 2 part-time spinners and 36-year-old Woakes who’s played every game.
