5th Test (The Oval) - 31st July to 4th August

On the other hand, maybe a sketchy forecast means we'll see actual movement off the straight consistently in the Test; if there's one thing we know about modern Test cricket it's that games don't need much time at all to see a result in such circumstances
the oval is the roadiest of all england roads. it pre dates the era of baz and stokes.

its the single reason why ollie pope has a career.

I've definitely seen it swing and swing quite a lot under overcast skies though. Obviously not to the level of TB 2015 but I don't think it needs to be.

And yet in 25 Tests this century there have been just 4 draws, the last one being in 2013. Two of those draws would have seen results if not for the weather.

It hasn't been a road for much of the last 2/3 years when I have gone to watch county cricket there, as I work near there. I am not actually a Surrey fan but I watch a fair bit of cricket over there. It is correct to say that the Oval was very much a road from the mid 90s up until about 5 years ago for county cricket. But they've left grass on the pitches since then. As you rightly say, the pitches do actually deteriorate and it is definitely a lot tougher chasing last. India would be utterly mad not to pick Kuldeep for this with one of the two medium pace no-rounders to depart.

Stokes misses out :-O 2 best bowlers out of the final game.

England line up with:

Crawley
Duckett
Pope (c)
Root
Brook
Bethell
Smith
Woakes
Atkinson
Overton
Tongue

No Dawson - Root and Bethell doing the spin. Bethell comes in at 6.

Wow. Interesting choice to shoehorn in a mediocre spinner for every test but the one at the Oval.

I know India aren't at full strength either, but they've got a big opportunity to level the series against that XI.

Dawson must feel as sick as a pig, not that he was particularly outstanding, but there’s no way he gets dropped if Stokes is fit, being replaced as the spinner by a part-timer must sting. Glad to see Bethell get a go, even if the circumstances aren’t ideal, not surprising to see all the seamers apart from Woakes replaced

the cynical part of me thinks he may have been called up, knowing it was going to be an absolute road just so team bazben could further their 'county cricket sucks' agenda.

the rational part of me thinks all english spinners suck.

Maybe England know something we don’t? I don’t think they’d have been averse to picking Dawson at 7 if they’d really wanted a frontline spinner, they picked Woakes at 7 last year in Stokes’ absence despite the fact that his batting has fallen off a cliff. No word from the India camp, but Cricinfo have suggested that maybe India won’t go with Kuldeep

The thinking must be that the difference in spin quality between Root/Bethell and Dawson isn't worth a whole fast bowler. I'd be more on board with that thinking if the fast bowler in question was better than Overton.
