England players and selection discussion thread

Hope we don't replace Bashir with Bethell and bat him 8. We gain nothing in spin and Bethell's wasted at 8. If Bethell comes in it should be for Pope.

No chance Crawley gets dropped either. He's locked in for Australia under this regime.
I can't help feel that Crawley will probably get a 60 odd in the next two games that will help the management justify why he should go to Australia, regardless of the overall lack of merit. His records since the start of the 2024 English season in test colours is 24 and that includes his ton against Zim.

Crawley will never be dropped as long as the regime is in place

the only way is for him to get an injury and even then he would come straight back in

he’s unique in English cricket as the only undroppable player to average 30

Anyway for Rehan Ahmed into the Test side do we wonder? Hadn't realised he's been unable to bowl a lot this season due to injury.

115 and 26 with the bat

6/51 and 5/60(may be more) with the ball

WG Grace was the youngest to achieve a century and 10fer in FC cricket a few days before turning 20 in 1865

Ahmed pulling it off a few weeks before he turns 21. Wonder if anyone else has done it before turning 21 since Grace?

He's got plenty of time to improve mind, his batting getting a lot better can only help. Would he end up doing the Moeen route into the side.

We shall see if he can get a look in before another Asia series, albeit the cricket world doesn't seem to like Leggies in red ball.

If Dawson does well then there is little need to rush Rehan. The more runs and overs he can get, the better. In 2-3 years when both Dawson and Stokes are done he will be a perfect number seven, with four seamers.

Rehan Ahmed is the seventh youngest to score a hundred and take 10 wickets in a first-class match.

The youngest is Xen Balaskas, who achieved the feat twice within nine days during February 1930. He was playing for Griqualand West against Eastern Province and Western Province respectively. On the first occasion his age was 19 years and 123 days.

The others younger than Rehan in ascending age order were Jack Crawford, WG, Wasim Raja, EM Grace and Shoaib Malik.

The oldest were Emmott Robinson for Yorkshire in 1930 and Peter de Vaal for Eastern Transvaal in 1992. Both were aged 46.

WG Grace recorded a century with a ten-wicket match haul on 14 occasions. On two of these he scored a double hundred and on another took all ten wickets in an innings. Next come Giffen and Woolley with 6 of these all-round performances. Two of Woolley's occurred after his fortieth birthday.

Among current players, only Liam Dawson has achieved the feat more than once.

Not really relevant to this thread but that Leicestershire first innings is a weird one - Ahmed, Hill and Handscomb scored 3 centuries and 367 of the 398 total. The others 8 batters contributed 15 with 4 ducks, outscored by the 16 extras.

Cheers for sharing you see something you think is right and take it as gospel.

What a hell of a full name that Xen has!!!

Said it in the match thread but for all the forced excitement around Archer, he ain't a wicket taker. Too short, too wide, not enough balls at the stumps.

The pitches have been absolutely diabolical this summer but my god this attack looks pedestrian.

Another issue with the pitches is that they reckon the drainage system that grounds now use sucks a lot of moisture out of pitches and outfields. When you combine that with our dry summer (even Manchester!) then that probably helps partly explain the flat decks but possibly not entirely. Perhaps it is the Chief Execs who don't like games that just about last 3 days?

Potts not in the squad. Overton's been called up though, so could go Atkinson, Tongue, Overton, but I can see them going Woakes, Atkinson and Overton personally.
What do England have against Potts? The wording of the article on Cricinfo suggests Atkinson is being lined up for Woakes, so we might see all three out and out seamers being replaced, but if anyone is to miss out, I’d rather it be Overton than Atkinson (fitness permitting) or Tongue, Tongue at least managed to pick up a wicket last week!

Did Overton have an issue with the authorities over something fairly recently?
