Has Root had one? Probably not. He's mostly used to watching his team getting spanked 5-0 and being Cummins' bunny for most of the series.

Yeah because Australia made a B team on flat roads, he averages less than Root against actual frontline attacks.

I don’t think anyone is placing him in the same tier as Smith. He’s in the same tier as ATGs like Dravid.

Speaking of Smith in general Joe Root needs to be careful now as he's entered his 130's now and we all know that's Smith's version of a Daddy Hundred where he packs it in and get out in dumbass fashion.

Almost 40 hundreds and none against your biggest rival at their home is a major blot on his test career.

Smith on the other hand was greatness in Ashes 2019. Hostile crowd, concussed, yet was the standout player of the entire series.

Root by his standards has been pretty underwhelming in comparison.

Just accept it mate, he's going past Tendulkar. And rightly so too. No one should be judged on their efforts against a bunch of cheats.

The greatest is a subjective judgement and not necessarily based on the number of runs.

Never really had a series defining Ashes and no 100s to show in Australia obviously (got smoked down under for his most of his career)

He was England's MOTS in 2015, 2 tons and 2 50s. But while Smith, and Rogers, scored a few more runs, how, where and when Root got his was more impressive.

By close of day 1 in the 4th Test, in bowler friendly conditions, he had more than doubled Australia's 1st innings score and remained not out.

In the 1st Test, he came in with England at **** all for three and scored 130-odd.

No century at Edgbaston, the other game England won, but he was 90ish for once out in a fairly low scoring game.

He did bugger all on the flat London tracks, one of which was a dead rubber, but given the series ended 3-2, he was pretty much the difference. I would consider that series defining.
