It's strange. You would think he must have felt vindicated and on top of the world after his bowlers put in that performance but he showed up timid as heck instead. No comparison obv, but can you imagine Kohli in his pomp coming out in any frame of mind other than insufferably confident?
I don't think Gill wanted to have to come out and bat in the final few minutes of day's play. That's what makes him walking out at No. 4 even more puzzling instead of sending a nightwatchman right after Nair was out lbw, in my opinion. Imagine Gill and Rahul putting on a partnership, with dangerous Pant et al. to come. Wasn't meant to be, though. Hope this isn't the beginning of the end for him with his form this series.

I don't think Hawkeye extrapolates for lateral movement in the air that may or may not occur after the ball hits the pad. There was one LBW where Wagner sent down a banana that was clearly swinging back to hit leg-stump, but not accounting for any swing after impact Hawkeye overruled the on-field out decision.

It's also really quite bad at determining the point of impact. Which would probably be solved if cameras with a non-joke amount of frames per second were used (looking at you, run out cam).

Otherwise, you're spot on obvs.
The way Hawkeye does it is correct under the current interpretation of the rules I believe. The umpires are told to not assume any lateral movement after impact.

You don't think this equally applies to the hosts? India should still be favourites here. Fourth innings chases shouldn't be easy but they need one decent partnership. If they lose a couple early though, they'll really struggle. Pant is the obviously the key. If he bats for 90 minutes or so tomorrow the game will nearly be done.
It does apply to ENG too, yes. But obviously, they have grown up playing in conditions that are even more stressful to bat vs. the swinging ball compared to most of the Indians, who only get a chance to come and play on these surfaces every 3-4 years (barring the ones who have played a few matches in the County Championship like Nair, Sai, etc.)

Ian Ward is a terrible commentator and host. Dislike his disparaging tone. He himself was a failure, barely played any tests, but you got to listen to the way he conducts himself talking to current cricketers as well as former greats of the game. Maintains this derogatory attitude. Very hard to listen to him; he ruins the whole experience of listening to Atherton Hussain etc.
That is until you listen to some of the Talk Sport cricket commentators like Steve Harmison et al., which make Wardy sound like Mark Nicholas in comparison.

Bullshit. Hawkeye captures all the camera visible information of how the ball travels until it strikes the batsman, and predicts the remaining path accordingly. It does so drastically more accurately and consistently than any human ump can. That inclues whatever variable bounce or wind effect on the ball, because Hawkeye literally sees it (and with a more holistic visual context incorporating 3 dimensions compared to single view of human).

That's the reason that we grade the umps compared to how often their answers correspond to Hawkeye and not the other way around.
there have been some clearly massive **** ups by hawkeye, particularly when there 2 impacts close together such that you can't assume it's accuracy. Still better on average than umpires though, obviously

What an amazing day. As expected, India finally had their top order collapse. I blame effing Karun. We could have ended the day 1 down. Instead we are now 4 down and lost 3 top batsmen. :(

Gill looking nervous is understandable. Its his first big chase as a captain. Would you say 2 of these wickets were thrown away? Jaiswal was a ball that was there to be hit and I guess Karun let himself down. Unsure of the Gill ball as it did do something to defeat him.

As I said before, with the Shaz-Virat India this was an easy win but with this lot, it seems like a loss. :( Still, happy with the fight shown so far.
I disagree with the last part. Remember Edgbaston 2018, when India lost chasing 194 after Sam Curran out of all people played a blinder of a lower order knock? Or that same series in Southampton when they failed to make 246 on fairly subcontinental conditions.

Kohli-Shastri era led to some milestones, but it's kind of overrated by many spectators of the game. Their fast bowling and fielding was 100x better than under Dhoni, Ganguly, etc. but their batting still had the same problems against the moving ball, which cost them multiple matches that could have given them some key test series wins in SEN (not A, of course). Can't believe they played the likes of Murali Vijay, Shikhar, and Dinesh Karthik on that 2018 tour, and didn't even play one warm up game to prepare. But, I digress.

The current side have shown fight, yes. But the harsh reality is that sport is results oriented. No one will talk of India's individual performances unless they win the game. End of the story. As for their 2nd innings (so far), I think that Jaiswal shot was incredibly lazy. And Nair had a complete brain fade. Can't blame Akash Deep and Gill though. They got really good deliveries. But Nair should have belted that ball for 4 instead of leaving.

Yes. Took a great catch too.
If it's in the rules, fair play I guess. England have stretched the laws of the game more than most in recent years so consider it karma.

ICC probably need to add a rule to prevent it though. Like only a player in the named 11 can takeover keeping rather than anyone in the squad. It's too open to manipulation.

That used to be the rule, it was changed for reasons I don't understand

That did used to be a rule between 1980 and 2017 but it was scrapped at that time for some reason. KL Rahul would have been keeping instead and I doubt Pope would have been out in the first innings.

Needs to be brought back IMO. I don't think sub fielders should even be allowed in close catching positions (slips, gully, bat pad).

India failed to chase similar totals under that leadership didn’t they?

2018 4th Test - lost by 60 runs chasing 245
2018 1st Test - lost by 31 runs chasing 194
S

We didn’t win a single game chasing in 2018 or 2021.

A bit off topic from the current state of the match, but it will be interesting to see how many more chances Karun Nair will be given after this game. I suspect he might just have his stay extended at minimum through the Oval if India win. But I'm sorry to say, it may be curtains for him if they lose, with almost no chance he'll be called back at some point later.

Well, after Australia's batting was mocked relentlessly for the low scores produced in the WI series, England get bowled out for under 200 the first time they're faced with a deck that isn't as flat as a pancake.

What a shock.

Yeah he’s done I think. Pleasantly surprised he got 3 tests actually given how quickly we seem to discard players. Probably had to do with his slip catching.

Agree. It's like when they changed pokemon after generation 5 so you didn't need HMs. Building your team of 6 included balancing which ones needed which HMs.
