3rd Test (Lord’s) - 10 July to 14 July

Hard hitting and big bats have been around for many years now though. Nothing seems to suggest it’s increased in the last 1 year or so.
The frequency that umpires are using the ball guage has definitely increased post Covid. There must have been an ICC directive sent through about it. Umpires in HK who do associate internationals were instructed relatively recently to carry a ball guage with them onto the field, and it's now common practice even at club level.

I think the complaints about the Dukes must have been around for a good 5+ years, and only in the last two years we have seen umpires acting on it, hence the public attention.

Hope they can figure out a solution. An extra layer of lacquer would make the ball harder, but it's already hard enough that we've had 3 finger injuries this summer. Not sure what treatment can be done to the leather they're getting.

Since we will only have upto 80 overs on day four, two ideal scenarios for England-

Bat fast, get 350 in 70-75 overs.
Bowl 95+ overs at India.

Bat whole day, get 350.
Bowl 90 overs at India.

2nd new ball will be critical on this pitch, so I doubt England gives any less than 90 overs.
Based on the three days so far I would not expect 5rpo. England may as well bat the whole day and see where it gets them.

I think the particularly slow overrates in this match are a consequence of the hot weather and seam dominated attacks (Aggers the other day dismissed the "heat" thing by saying "well it's just as hot in Multan, or Dubai, or Koltata..." (er... 80%+ of overs delivered by spin?!), plus some rather bizarre lengthy stoppages for injuries, and obviously all the ball changes*. Notwithstanding the stuff at the end of the day, in general i don't actually think most of what goes on is 'deliberate' time wasting by teams, it is just a general lack of urgency all round - which mainly comes from the umpires (albeit captains could do more pro-actively as well). An interesting suggestion made the other day was to fine the umpires for slow play! That would sort it out in no time!!!

*i find this ridiculous. I was at Lords watching this - it was taking 5-10 minutes to change a ball. The usual routine with the hoops, slow march over to consult with the other umpire... and then waiting for the alternative balls to be ceremoniously walked out to the middle and back again at a snail's pace. You could save 2-3 minutes just by sending them out in a remote control car, if the third umpire can't be persuaded to break into at least a trot! It's that sort of thing that are easy wins but those in charge show no basic imagination in sorting out.

Personally I would not want to see matches won or lost due to runs/wickets from slow over rate penalties. Feels too artificial. Plus it would disproportionately affect games played in hot weather / seamer friendly conditions.

At the moment, we have seen teams miss out on qualifying for the WTC Finals due to accumulated slow over rate penalties. That is a good place to start.

Introducing a between-overs stop clock like the ICC has for ODIs and T20Is would be a good step IMO. A lot of time is wasted in between overs. This introduces an objective measure to ensure both the fielding side and the batters are ready in a timely manner.

It's really hard to stop players from ****ing around if they want to. There are so many tricks. Call for new gloves, call for the groundstaff to fix the runup/popping crease, moan about the ball or sightscreens, feign an injury, ask for a bathroom break, etc. It's been a part of the game for as long as cricket has been played.
They introduced the stop clock at the start of this series and instead of speeding up we have seen these two clown sides go slower then ever.

when 13 runs were left, India had 4 wickets left.

387-387
Weirdly one of my earliest random cricketing memories as a child was remembering two teams being tied on first innings in a test match (England-India 1986 390 a piece). And a pretty rare feat it is too (think this was the 9th or 10th time in test history?)

Instead of run penalties, let's introduce on field penalties. If you bowl 10 overs short, you start your next innings without gloves for the first 10 overs. If batsman waste time, they have to take their gloves off for an over in the current innings.
Or you could remove a stump or add a stump as it happens. Fielding side not ready to bowl on time in a said over, lose a stump for the next over. Batting side not facing up in time have a stump added.
I think batting with gloves off is too lenient. 10 overs short should equal batting with the bat held between your arse cheeks for 10 overs. Batsmen waste time = bat held between the arse cheeks for 1 over. Fielding side wastes time, bowler has to bowl with ball gripped between arse cheeks.

The latter does punish everyone though to be fair.

"grow some ****ing balls!"
Yeah, I don't have a problem with that. Whereas the photo I saw this morning of Gill wagging his finger in Crawley's face was less palatable. Especially as Gill has some previous in this test when he thought that was the way to communiciate with one of the umpires. Hopefully Crawley, in the poshest voice he could muster, quietly invited Gill to relocate his ****ing finger up his ****ing arse. And then offered to help with that particular endeavour if necessary.

That's all.

I'm hearing that Bashir is a doubt for the fourth Test due to his finger injury.
Any replacement who comes in (I assume Hartley/Rehan/Leach/Dawson) can bat well too. So the England batting lineup is going to get strengthened further, especially with Atkinson potentially returning too. Will genuinely bat till 11.

Since we famously hate draws, we’ll try our level best to score quickly even if it means some of the batters will lose their wickets cheaply…if it means we end up losing, I don’t think it’s stupid or ‘devaluing’ Test cricket, merely the risk that we are trying to take to win the game

On a side note did anyone expect Archer to still be bowling 90mph+ spells deep into the 3rd session of a very hot day?

Hopefully he stays fit and can play much more than he has in recent times be it tests or in pyjama cricket. Good to see him back but you do wonder when the next injury will occur.
