Cricket balls have not evolved to keep up with bigger bats, harder pitches and stronger players. You might actually need a more rigid, yet softer material than leather. Maybe a synthetic ball that is also therefore waterproof, eliminating the influence of wet outfields.
The ball was changed in England’s innings after 30 overs of poking and prodding around. It’s got nothing to do with any of the factors you’ve stated imo.

Some funny comments here. Sledging is cool again, until it happens to your team and the day was too slow but we hate bazball. At least people are twigging to the rip off over slow over rates. You'd have to be gullible to buy the so called quality of cricket excuse. There's no quality watching bowlers dawdle back to their run ups or captains "meticulously setting their fields". I'd rather watch catch up overs from the likes of Joe Root than that. Besides we accept part time bowlers all the time in limited over cricket without complaint.

Someone asked about the number of overs the old WI quartets used to bowl. From, perhaps faulty memory, I think it was about 12 an hour. You could've fitted an ad break between each delivery.

37 overs lost so far in 3 days. That is more than a session lost. Atrocious. The teams are intent to play 4 day tests even in scheduled 5 day tests.

Interesting. Still ahead of what this lot have been bowling for most of the match.

I’d love to see some stats from that era just to have some context to see what, if anything, has changed.

Is "no more than six on the legside" an actual rule? I thought the only restriction was no more than two behind square.

Maybe it should be though if it stops this garbage being rolled out every single ****ing game.

Ah it's an AI hallucination. This is the actual rule:

28.4 Limitation of on side fielders

At the instant of the bowler’s delivery there shall not be more than two fielders, other than the wicket-keeper, behind the popping crease on the on side. A fielder will be considered to be behind the popping crease unless the whole of his/her person whether grounded or in the air is in front of this line.

In the event of infringement of this Law by any fielder, the striker’s end umpire shall call and signal No ball.

The 'AI' will probably be pulling that rule from various amateur competitions which have it as a playing condition. For instance, it's very common in junior cricket. But it's neither in the laws nor is it a playing condition in internationals.

Since we will only have upto 80 overs on day four, two ideal scenarios for England-

Bat fast, get 350 in 70-75 overs.
Bowl 95+ overs at India.

Bat whole day, get 350.
Bowl 90 overs at India.

2nd new ball will be critical on this pitch, so I doubt England gives any less than 90 overs.

I'm pretty confident that no more than 5 fielders are allowed on the leg side in LOIs. Not that it ever comes up.
